Heard lots of good stuff about the Rivera as an attenuator which would certainly be handy for my needs. Anyone here using this guy and if so, how do you like it and have you used it direct for recording?

For $499 it seems like a good choice and I use ReCabinet and Wall Of Sound 3 for cab sims. Can't see paying for the version with the EQ as I would handle that with my DAW.

For some reason I get worried the attenuator is going to kill my amp. Fear of the unknown I suppose.

You cant get a better attenuator in that price range or below than the Rivera Rock Crusher, I own one and it puts a smile on your face every time you use it, its one of those pieces of gear that you don't feel doubt about whether you should have dropped the $500 bucks on after you get it.

I also couldn't see paying more for the EQ'ed model but:

I also hook mine to my mixer (Allen and Heath ZED-10) for personal recording purposes and it recommends a good EQ between it and the mixer, and I will say they are right, there is no speaker simulation in the Rock Crusher so you will need either a Cab simulator or a good EQ. I use a Carl Martin Para Pre Amp EQ pedal and it DOES make a difference.

If I had an endless supply of cash I would probably drop for the more expensive EQ'ld model or better yet pickup a TWO Notes Torpedo Live, and be done with it.

Yep for the $500 smackaroos, I wouldn't even look at another attenuator, for one it actually allows you to knock the tone down to literally whisper quiet jam volumes with all the tone intact, is that the same as pumping through the cab ? no but it sure does make playing alot more fun, and you dont have to spend all your time at home playing some crappy solid state or headphoning it just to have a late night sessions on the geetar, I live in a 80's style split level home and when I am downstairs in my studio late at night, I can play fairly loud for the room yet my family sleeps snug and undisturbed, and if I needed to I could turn down even further on the studio setting.

Alot of guys will try and sell you on some of the better known Boutique attenuators, and Im sure they are nice too, but out of the mega hours of research I did none of them allow you to knock it down to whisper friendly volume for that home studio/bedroom gig that we guitarist appreciate so much, but the Rock Crusher does.

But again you stated you want it for direct, then your gonna need a nice EQ or speaker simulator to run into before hitting the mixer, if you start to actually consider the more expensive Rock Crusher by Rivera, then I will say just between you and me, you would be way better off buying the Two Notes Torpedo Live, and especially for recording purposes.

Hope that helps.

Awesome! For speaker sims as mentioned, I use the Two Notes Wall Of Sound and ReCabinet 3 so no EQ needed.

Pretty bold statement as it's fairly new, no? Also it's about twice as much as the Rivera and still has me using the software cab sims. Not sure I see the $400 price difference but I'm certainly open to more input on it.

Don't overlook the Alex attenuator, they are great. I bought one over the Rockcrusher, why, well I found a used Alex attenuator before I found a used Rockcrusher. Only few complaints I have seen the rockcrusher, is that the step sizes are too big and that in the bedroom mode, some don't like it squashing down that low.

I've been using the rock crusher since it came out and love it. I also use the wall of sound and they work great together. If the recording version had been out when I got mine I would have gotten it instead just for more options and live use for directly into the board. The things built like a tank and I've run dimed 100watt amps into it for hours on end with no issues. It gets warm but that's it, under more sane volumes it never even warms up.

All the song style clips, meaning not the amp or mic demos, on my soundcloud link below. I also put together a youtube comparison when I first got it just to compare the attenuated and bypassed tone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6pXV2k5XIU

Nice! Checked out "the cleansing" and "fjm". Solid tone for sure.
