Rock is dead

I agree for the most part.

There's one thing that will never die, however. And that is the nostalgia and sentimentality.

We dig the tunes we dig most likely because they remind us of days gone by in our crazy youth.

Millions of others share the same mindset; everybody wants their youth back.

You can still sell this vibe with originals or covers, although you'll probably have to do the
marketing yourself.

Amen! Epic riffs and funny lyrics.

And to the person bringing up Slayer, they defined metal. From the 80's and so on. I guess you missed that. One lesser album does not take that away. Bad example.

How did I miss this?

SO mother fucking D

Check this shit out. OMG!!! 2:13

S.O.D would not work in 2015. Too many fucking pussies walking the planet now.

Just because one thinks it is dead, doesn't mean that we can't stop listening or making it. Enjoy and have fun with whatever talent level you are at.

all things come back full circle, eventually. Glad I grew up during the time to appreciated it to it's fullest!

Rock music will never die. It goes thru cycles and bands come and go but there will always be something great out there.

I know they are not new, but Clutch has some good stuff. I think there has been some great songs from older bands lately. The new Iron Maiden is great and they newest Motorhead is getting great reviews. I just heard the newest Megadeth song and thought that was a great sounding song.

As a last resort, I know there are a trillion songs/bands I've never heard and can go back. :) I'd rather listen to Britney Fox on a loop for the rest of my life than listen to some of the poppy garbage out there.

We're fine as long as we have Dave Grohl. :D

Grohl's been writing the same chorus section in every song for the past 20 years. :D

IMHO, the Foo Fighters best stuff came out in the late 90's, since then I'm totally bored by them.

Ask Santa for the Sonic Highways series on blu-ray. Thank me later.

You guys are dead wrong.
There are SO many awesome rock bands in circulation right now.
Get out of your bubbles.
Queens of the Stone Age! Fuckin rocks.
If the first two Mars Volta records or a mastadon record came out in the 70's you would all be still sucking their dicks.

The list is LONG and Strong.

Fuck the music industry , it deserved to be killed.
Too many talentless fucks pulling the strings and taking all the money.

Guess what , if your fucking world class your still packing arenas (Read: Foo Fighters)

Too many great bands to even run down a list.

Don't get old and cranky, go out and find the new Rock. It's there, and stronger than ever.

It might not be on the radio , but fuck the radio.
None of the music I grew up listening to really made pop radio in my day.

Yea, classic rock stations played that shit and that's cool.
And guess what, kids these days STILL listen to all the stuff WE love too.

That means Rock will never die.
You won't see any poofy haired lipstick gay boys playing squeaky guitar noises (thank fucking god that died)

And fuck the glam Sven. It was shit music then and it's shit music now.

The REAL motherfuxkers never did that shit.

And they DONT NOW.

Have any of you even fucking heard Tool? Or perfect circle for that matter?
Great fucking rock music.

And for the record , I worked on Sound City and Sonic Highways so I may be a bit Biased, but Grohl is out there with a live rock band playing his heart out and promoting INSTRUMENTS, and turning off the cell phones and getting in the garage with your friends.

Unlike that piece of shit Gene Simmons who tries to say rock is dead, Grohl is out there breathing life into it.

Don't be bitter that your hair bands died, they fucking sucked anyway.

And for the record S.O.D was fucking awesome, I wish they would remaster that first album.

Damn... you're never at a loss for words or opinion, are you?

Yes, Grohl rocks. Tool rocks. And other bands rock.

NO... they are not writing "golden age" anthems at the level of the greatest bands of the 70s and 80s, and there certainly aren't as many acts these days that set themselves apart. I turn-on classic rock radio and when "More Than A Feeling", or "Don't Stop Believin", or whatever comes on, my teenage kids are singing along with every word. They're also very aware of newer rock bands like Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, QOTSA, etc and like their music. Do I think that my grandkids will sing along with every word of this generation's classics then my kids turn on the radio (if they even use radio at that point)? Nope. I do not believe that today's rock will stand the test of time like yesterday's rock on the whole. I just don't. As a sample... yesterday's pop/rock was Journey, Van Halen, etc. Today's pop/rock is Lady Ga Ga, Blink 182, etc (or worse).

OMG, seriously... Grohl fucking sucks. Doesn't have anything to do with "hair" REZ....some were good some bad. The good ones have their share of exposure on youtube and they have their fans in vast numbers. Not black and white issue here. I know you like to center on what you think is right, and we agree on a few bands....but to say Grohl and others you mentioned will have someone following their music like previous generations is pretty blind IMO. Grohl is very bland from a song and guitar playing pov. I don't see him inspiring anyone to do anything. Very forgettable.....

I think rock music is fine, but the thinking here and in general on how to guage how popular a certain kind of music is outdated and the old way of doing things. Everything's out there at tips of our fingers. Hard rock, classic metal, melodic rock has it's fans. I don't think it's dead at all.

People love the old shit as much as ever and there's new stuff coming out...but most of the old guys don't represent and it's gonna take something new in those styles to break out. Folks want new music.

He fucking sucks....he's very vanilla. I'll give him props that he seems to respect some good music and he seems like a good dude which gets major props from me, but in general....not very inspiring. Forgettable. Folks like live music, they have to have somewhere to go lol.

Grohl - good guy.

Songs like Monkey Wrench? Come on. One step up from Mainstream Pop Bullshit.

And that hair, who the fuck does he think he is, John Petrucci?

I can not agree less

No, the issue I have is TIME.
I mean I have limited time to sift through shit to find good stuff. So, I'm still listening to the same shit as in the late 80's and 90's, save for Lamb of God and a few others.
Still rocking Pantera, Slayer, Exodus, Early Megadeth, Death Angel, Dark Angel, Devastation and a bunch of other shit.

Lately I'm trying to listen to some stoner rock or southern sludge. But again, 800000 bands to sift through.
Down is good. Eyehategod, good. But the other 800000, I don't know yet.

I'm out of the loop too, which doesn't help. And finally this place doesn't help either, drooling at peoples NGD NAD constantly instead of actually doing something.

Grohl may suck at shredding on a purple Ibanez but doesn't suck at making money playing rock music and writing catchy songs that span generations, demographics and cultures. "Vanilla" songwriting is an opinion as that's the favorite flavor of the majority. Remember, it's been 20 years and you still can't turn on a rock radio station without hearing many of his early songs, usually in the same song block as Van Halen, Black Sabath, Rush, etc. if that's not standing the test of time I don't know what is.

What you really need to understand is that its the Grohls of the world doing the leg work thats keeping music as a business relevant. His contribution is the gateway for many, usually the young, to start playing and buying music, keeping even the smallest flame of hope for new music alive. A young Foo Fighter fan may eventually turn into the talented musician that all of us guitar nerds will be talking about in a few years on these very pages. Most of us here as kids didn't save up to buy Al Di Meola's music as our first album.

Grohl makes my point, he has been around since the late 80's. He may be relevant but he is old. Where is the next band that writes as well as Zep or Kansas?
