Routing a guitar...?

Has anyone here ever had a neck pickup added to a guitar that didn't have one stock? I have a Charvel Journeyan that I love, but so much of my playing is based on being able to use a neck pickup. I'm seriously considering having a neck single-coil pickup added to the guitar. I figured a route for a single would take out less wood, and may have less of an effect on the guitar's tone. If anyone has had this done, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Nice guitar. I'm a sucker for natural finished guitars.

With such a nice axe, I'd seriously hunt down a reputable guitar builder and repair guy to do the work professionally.

Also, you may have several options for a neck pickup installation. For instance my Quicksilver has a Bolt-In construction of the neck. Meaning the neck pickup is fastened directly to the neck from the body cavity (also known as direct coupling). This method is more expensive, so very few companies offer it. Further, Bolt-In is highly recommended because the heel is buried in the body.

Two other methods of neck construction is the Neck-Through-Body and Deep-Set neck tenon.

Those are nice and for around 300 used one of the best values out there. Nice guitar! If you route it you will probably lose a little of your tone, losing some wood. My old singer years ago did it to an early 80s San Dimas. Worked fine but he had a luthier do it. No complaints from him. I bet he kicks himself doing that to an original early Charvel though!

With all respect, when's the last time that you saw or laid your hands on a acoustic "Lute"? My guess is probably never.

For the record, a "Luthier" is a person who builds and repairs acoustic Lutes. A guitar builder is a person who builds and repairs guitars; a guitar is not a Lute and the construction of a acoustic Lute is far more complex than the construction of a typical dreadnaught guitar that we commonly see and play.

So my point is the word or term "Luthier" is thrown around like the word or term "Engineer". The is specific training and specific education that is required to be one or the other is vastly different.

Luthier != Guitar Builder

I'd go single coil. Here's mine to give you an idea how it might look. I'd get a pro woodworker to route it since there is no pickup ring to hide any imperfections.

Oh if I do this, it will definitely be done by a professional. I'm not worried about devaluing the guitar. I only paid $150 for it originally. I've added locking tuners, a graphite nut and the Gotoh V100N bridge. So it's already a money pit...lol!

Guitars are stringed instruments, are are Lutes, Violins, cello etc.

I agree the term luthier is way over used for simple guitar tech duties. I can slap parts together, solder, set up guitars but I'm no luthier. I don't make the bodies, necks or parts

To the OP - as I stated earlier, if you want an invasive procedure as routing out a neck pickup cavity, I strongly suggest hunting down a GUITAR BUILDER/REPAIR person to do it.

It's easy to do, get a template for a single from stew mac and a router bit with a bearing... and a long drill bit for the channel. can drill from the neck pocket straight back to the other bridge pickup and then run down from there.

take your time, measure twice cut once.

I would have a reputable luthier do the job. I bought a Carvin that was routed for 2 single-coils, and took it to have a middle pickup added. Cost of the route was about $60 or so, and was perfectly done!

I actually had a Carvin all Mahogany NT that my dad routed a humbucker from a single coil route and it turned out good, but I would take it to a "Luthier". oh sorry I did not use the term correctly a guitar tech/repairman!!
