Running EQ before/after preamp...

So I tried a fish n chips eq in my JSX loop this weekend for leads only...i liked the tone, but am curious what would the difference be if I put in front of the amp.

I know to just try it myself but I wont get a chance till thursday and dont want to waste time playing around with cords...

just a general idea would be cool...

depend's upon your setup
i do the EQ / DIST / EQ CHAIN frequently
therefore i use one before my amp and another in the effectsloop

If you want to sculpt your mids-> Scoop in the Loop, Boost out Front.

Stick it in front of the amp, boost the mids, lessen the highs and lows, and it will tighten things up a bit.

Better solution is just to use an OD pedal which does this anyway (to a greater or lesser degree).

use the eq in front if you want it to eq/boost etc your guitars and/or other pedals.

in the loop if you want to eq you amps tone further or just to have as a volume boost for solos.

simple as that.

Pre distortion EQ is crucial to dialing in an amps voicing and also shaping the amount of distortion in different frequency bands, the amp already has post distortion EQ albeit not so precise.

my vote is for both in front and after the preamp.

Yup..he pretty much nailed it.

And to oversimplify - using an EQ in front of an amp is kind of like swapping pickups, only there's WAY more variability in the tones you can get.

Bass too loose? Cut some of the lower bass.
Pickups too bright? Cut some highs.
Pickups sound anemic? Add some mids.

In my opinion, a good (and QUIET) EQ pedal is one of the more important tools for dialing in your sound.
