Hey fellas. I have been on a bit of a classic Rush high as of late. I have been playing around with recording a cover of the tune and decided on my all time favorite, La Villa Stranigiato. I am not good enough on bass so I posted for an existing backing track. I used my Anderson Classic and the Mark IV on RHY 2 (channel 2) boosted with my BB Preamp.

I didn't record the intro since it started without me and I wasn't quite ready. Skip to about 1:40 to get to the goods.

I am posting two versions:

1. Mic'ed up cab with my Shure 57 and e609
2. Audio in the room via my Q3HD (you'll need to turn it up to get the full volume)

Anyways, I love the way the amp sounds in the room but struggling finding the right mic placement. Hopefully by saying that I am struggling with mic placement doesn't bias your answer. Maybe it sounds fine and I my ears are a little fatigued. Either way, any best practices when placing a 57 or e609? I guess I shouldn't expect too much since I am a complete amateur in regards to recording experience and equipment.

Either way, hope you like the clip. Always loved this tune. I know I bend a bit sharp on a couple of notes but decided to do the whole thing in one take with no overdubs.

Great post. Very tough song with the very odd way Lifeson picks notes and bend.

Sweet axe btw.

Thanks dude! The only problem I have is his second solo break in the last third of the tune. Lifeson is a very unique and difficult player to emulate. Very mush has his own voice and does not always solo in traditional ways. That's partly why I like him so much.

I like his use of the volume knob swells. Knopfler does that too.

I can't ever get Rush leads without tab, just too weird, but he pulls it off cool.

Totally agree. He is the reason I started playing guitar.

No Rush fans or critiques?

First time in almost 4 years HCAF replied more than my Rig-Talk buds. :poke: :inlove:

Brother Chad... I think that it was an honorable attempt but I would like to hear it after you woodshed it for a bit. I wasnt crazy about the lead tone but I think that you did a good job dialing the delay .

Rush had their 15min of fame with me and my love for them ended as fast as it began. Lifeson is indeed very unique and I did enjoy learning tunes like Spirit of The Radio and Xandu...

Thanks Kage. Any suggestions on the lead tone? I used RHY2 with a boost. I have been using that as my main rock tone as of late. Any frequencies missing or too much of anything? I thought the Lead channel was a bit too modern or focused sounding for this kind of tune. I appreciate your feedback!

To be totally honest Bro, Im not exactly sure. I think something with a little more saturation, a more singing, sustaining smoother type of gain. Actually, I think that your rhythm tone is in the right ball park for leads with a bump in gain for the solo using the volume knob to clean/dirty things up as required..

That's the funny thing. To me, you just described the Lead channel.  I will try again and see how it comes out. Part of what I am doing is a little redefining of my playing. I have always been such a high gain guy. I'm trying to get a bit more refined and in control of my playing and gear. I guess ultimately I may be looking for some backing that I am heading in the right direction. I will definitely put some woodshedding in. Part of the problem is time. Between fatherhood, being a great spouse and my career I just don't have the time to dedicate to practice. So, I just hit record and play while winging what I can. I need to schedule time to improve.

Again, I appreciate your candid remarks. I am a big boy when it comes to constructive criticism. That's part of the reason I posted this thread. Thanks!!

I'm not going to comment on the performance because I think that you did a fantastic Job!

What I will comment on is that IMHO when it comes to your tone and clips, I think that you have a beat sounding speaker cab.
It's something that I have been thinking about for ages now (and this is STRICTLY my humble opinion lol.)

Ive done a lot of experimenting with tones over the years and It is my opinion that the cab and speakers that you use will account for 50% of your sound. (This wont shock many guys who have multiple cabs but you would be surprised by how many guitar players DONT KNOW THIS)

If you even noticed some of the guys who get a killer sound they always use a Particular cab or cabs.

I think that if you tried a few other cabs with the same amp that you are using you wont have as difficult of a time miking up your amp.

I hear a particular or familiar type of sound that is inherent in all of your clips and I think it has a lot to do with the cab. I also hear it in other peoples clips.

I could be wrong, but I highly recommend that you try other cabs and speakers if you can ;)

That's just my 0.002! (feel free to ignore me... Just thinking out loud here hahahaha!!)

all the best!

Would you recommend a cab or speaker change? To be honest, I have been using V30s strictly for the past 8 years. Changing cabs might be difficult for me. Do you have any speaker recommendations that would match well with the amp? I am a speaker noob and wouldn't even know where to start. Recommendations would be welcome since I just don't have a ton of disposable time.

Again, I appreciate the feedback!

There isn't anything wrong with your cab or speakers, you have lots of clips that sound great.

This one is pretty good, there are a few places that aren't quite right, but overall its a good version. As others have mentioned Lifeson is a very difficult player to emulate. I certainly can't play it this well.

As for the sound, did you try it on the lead channel without the eq ? I need to spend some more time on Rhy 2. I would be interested in how you have ch 2 dialed in.

That was great Chad. Yeah, that song is hard as hell to get perfect.
Regarding tone,I hear the bb-preamp over the Mark tone. At least it sounds this way to me.
To achieve that tone, I think a Marshall is called for with no boost.
