Rush with Annika Niles on drums opening the 2026 Juno Awards. Spoiler: She fits right in! I know John and Neil are smiling...

AL'S GUITAR IS LOUDER IN THE AUDIENCE MIX, THANKS BE TO GOD.
(THAT'S BEEN MY PET PEEVE ABOUT RUSH IN THE PAST 4 DECADES: SO OFTEN, AL'S GUITARS ARE MIXED TOO DAMN LOW.) HE'S NICE 'N LOUD HERE, THOUGH! (WELL, FOR MOST OF THE TUNE, ANYWAY.)

AL'S GUITAR MIXED TOO LOW.

I was mostly impressed that Geddy is pulling it off reasonably. Annika will be great in her roll, though given that this is a song off the first album, it's not really the Peart challenge yet!

I mean, his vocals are complete shit

But at least its him singing and it isn't backing tracks? That's wild

Just not the same since Ged had to resort falsetto.

YEAH, BUT TO BE FAIR, HE'S OLD. IN THE 80'S, I USED TO BE ABLE TO SING DEEP PURPLE'S "CHILD IN TIME" AND I NAILED IT CONSISTENTLY.
NO WAY I COULD DO THAT NOW.

OH, I HAD CAPS LOCK ON. DERP.

I'M NOT SHOUTING AT YOU, BRO. I'M JUST TOO FUCKIN' LAZY TO RE-TYPE IT ALL. LOL

When Zep re-appeared in 2007, they had a new drummer and they opened the concert with the first song from their first album.

Rush was in the (basically) same situation and did the same thing.

I think it's cool.

Plus, "Finding My Way" is a fuckin' BANGER!

Call me crazy, but there's a push and a swing to the groove that I've never heard from Rush before.
I actually kinda' like this.
That chick on the drums is killin' it!
Not withstanding Geddy's vox, this is pretty fukkin' cool, and waaayyy better than I thought it would be.

I think, in part, this is why they chose it. Give people a chance to hear her, and them without the immediate comparison pressure. I think it was a smart way to break the ice.

Musically I liked it well enough. Love that song and shocked they did it. Geddy's vocals on it sound pretty bad to me. It is such a huge tune to live up to vocally. Like Michael Jordan not being able to dunk. Must be weird to be in those shoes trying to sing that. Drums were fine. Give her credit for pulling off John Rutsey's parts :)

Haha, so here's my sad story from last night.

A few months ago, my wife got tickets to the Junos. She asked if I wanted to go, or should she take my stepdaughter instead. I said, no you can take her. There won't be anyone I like there, just a bunch of mediocre Canadian pop stars.

Shortly after that I got tickets to see Collective Soul and that just happened to be on the same day.

So last night, I'm watching Collective Soul play, and their singer is absolutely terrible. No voice whatsoever. Squeaking everything in a warbly falsetto because he just can't sing. No stage presence, and just kinda mumbling his way through everything.

I get a text from the wife. "Rush opened!"

Fuck!

Anyway, after I watched a video of their performance, and hearing Geddy's voice, I wasn't so pissed off.

That makes sense, but I suspect most of what drove it is first song, first album, and the song's content fits the moment. I don't know. I'm happy they're getting back out there. It'll be fun for those able to make a show. I don't have one near and am not interested in the total cost for experience, but I'd go if they toured through here.

I've also seen them 25+ times over the years, so plenty of happy memories.

Wow, I'm surprised. I saw Collective Soul maybe 10 years ago and was very impressed. They are (were?) a great band!

Also - LOL at your misfortune.

I haven't been able to listen to Rush live since what...R40? The dying cat voice thing is a problem.....and I'm more in the '70s/80s camp when Geddy had a totally different voice, and it ain't coming back....

I am a Canadian so generally I am polite.. but that shit sucked. Geddy's voice may have recovered some but that just didn't work and was way too loud in the mix. Lifeson's timing seems off in spots so I would say they need to wood shed those tunes if they expect people to pay those ridiculous prices. I personally am not going to pay 500$+ to see these guys with Anika on drums. She's a good drummer but they are making way too much out of her brilliance. There are hundreds of people who could do that gig and I think they are trying to draw attention away from the fact that Geddy and Alex are rusty.

Yeah I'm liking this instrumently more than Peart. Then again I never idolized Rush.

The vocals were always horrible. A slightly different horrible now, but not really worse IMO.

Knew Alex send a shit ton of guitars to auction.....this Lester looks like a "Greenie"

Wonder if Kirk gave him one.

Annika pulled it off, I knew she would. What a blessing to Al, Ged, Annika, and the fans.

I’m firmly in the “ Nothing after Moving Pictures” camp. My favorite album is Caress of Steel.
