I see both Sweetwater and Musicians Friend are now charging sales tax. Did a new law go into affect?

Yes. Out-of-state sales are now taxed at most retailers.

I didn’t get charged tax on my most recent orders, one from MF and one from SW. Both orders were placed this month. I know they have to charge tax if they have any sort of physical presence in the state.

Just went through the cart at Sweetwater and there’s no tax showing up for me. I’m in Ohio.

If you’re interested in more detail lookup South Dakota vs Wayfair.

Things are on their way to getting very complicated for online resellers. Fortunately most states require collection at a certain annual dollar amount so small sellers aren’t affected... yet. Some states have nothing in place so tax is still not collected for out of state sales... yet.

I’m in Illinois. They’re usually first in line with their hand out.

Yep, this killed my desire for a guitar last month. Had it ready, in the cart then bam. Over $50 for tax.

Was not in the budget and canceled the deal.

I'm sure they are trying to figure out how to tax private sales on items that have already been taxed once or twice. Look at the tax on used vehicles every time one is sold bammo sales tax. It's quite the mafioso syndicate.

A lot of States are desperate for cash. Illinois lost a record number of resident in 2018, 45,000 people 5th straight year in population decline. That's like losing a city the size of Rockford in 2018. The state also has a pension shortfall of 134 billion dollars. They are now using close 50% of the states general fund(taxes collected) to pay out current state pensioners. Companies like Caterpillar are leaving and other are following suit if they can.

Sounds like they have a presence in your state, I think that is the only thing that forces local sales tax.

No, it's from a recent Supreme Court ruling: https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/21/state ... eme-court/

Businesses no longer need to have a physical presence in a state in order for government to force sales tax. Local brick-and-mortar shops were complaining that they can't compete with large online retailers. So they basically whined like little bitches to the government to force all retailers to collect sales tax, online or not, in-state or out.

“Evening the playing field “.

It was bound to happen. Sucks, but I get why. I’m gonna bet there wasn’t a long line at the local tax offices to pay the sales tax we were all supposed to impose on ourselves. It was a good deal while it lashed. Gotta make sure that we take care of the ever increasing % of the population that doesn’t pay any tax, but still manages to get a refund each year.

it must be state by state
Musicians Friend isn't taxing me (Arizona)

Or MF hasn't started yet... I'm in PA and I just checked and Sweetwater is apparently going to tax me and MF isn't currently.

Yes sir in IL we now pay online tax.

Each state has a threshold, once sales in that state exceed the threshold then it's tax time forever. I'm rolling this out at my company now. All smart online companies are in some stage of rolling this out, expect pretty full compliance by mid-19.
