Yeah I had one of his Custom 3 Modules when I had MTS amps....

really good stuff there.

I had the first Custom 3 he did.

It was fucking awesome. I wish I still had it.

modesty forbids me to comment on the modules themselves *grins* but you really are missing out on the entire modular concept if you use a poweramp other than the Randall one. I ran mine for awhile with EL84s (using yellowjacket adaptors) and then KT88s on the other side. Since the amp was midi switchable too, with a RM4 preamp it gave me *8* different tones. Another fun combo is EL34s on one side and 6L6s on the other.

Finally, one other really neat idea with the power amp that I used to do is compare different brands and types of power tubes. Could load up say JJ 6L6s on one side and Ruby 6L6s on the other or whatever combination and compare them instantly. Plus you can bias each tube individually.

Tonewise I think the Randall is as nice as the boogie stuff, the VHT poweramps are a little better tonewise, but not nearly as versatile.

Hey Pete....Been a while since I been out the MTS land...
last thing I remember you working on was the Soldano Module.
Anything cooking up after that one?

Dan

i have a ton of the modular stuff.

i had

benzin
slodano
custom 3
and a few others

what i have left from the mts part is the salvado deluxe.

the rest is modded egnater modular stuff.

really awesome stuff.

i am curious how the modular egnater stuff will fair when it is made over seas instead of the custom shop.

Don't forget Jeff Hilligan has a couple of modded beasts out there too...the Scorcher and his 'Jeff In Chains' XTC thingy...they absolutely slay.

MTS completely satisfies the geek in me..just the though that I can mess with so many variables excites me like a little kid...in the good way that is!

Don't overlook the stock stuff....love or hate Lynch, he's brought some fantastic mods to the line.

I've probably had one of most of Pete's work...some of his first protos too...a lot of it only passed through to try other modules...it gets cost prohibitive to own so many!

I haven't had all of Salvation's stuff (probably never will..the stuff he does at the brutal end of the scale is not by thing) but he crams such a sheer number of options in to these things and is actually chasing the circuit of the pre-amps as best he can....it's killer.

Current stable (most of these are long time faves and almost permanently occupying space)

Grail (only has one cap mod by me), Pete Mark series special (3 way mid voicing), Salvation Deadplate (mid sweep version), Mr Scary (stock!), Salvation Angel (even if you are not of a fan on the ENGL tone this is one killer gainy module), Egnater COD (has the coupling cap modded to make it a little less bright), Ultra (input cap modded by me)

I don't see it happening in the near future. :(

Great...Great stuff!

I have been in and out of the MTS pool quite a few times. I am back in right now

I actually think I should ALWAYS have at least a RM20 on hand with a few modules.

Lately, I have been playing my RM100 exclusively. The individual bias, by tube, mentioned above is pretty damn awesome IMHO.

Have never tried anyof the Salvation Mods, but I plan to have a stable of them this time around.

I've said this in other threads but since you're all here, I'll say it again. With all of the modding going on with various amp platforms like the Marshalls, the 5150s, the Rectos, etc, why hasn't someone pushed the envelope and modified the MTS module platform to accomodate another gain stage or two? the mad scientist in me is eyeing up my stock XTC module thinking "hmmm"

No offense to any of the brilliant work that has gone into the current lineup of mods thus far, but its my belief that when attempting to push this design as it stands into the area of more gain, distortion, or coloration of tone, all of the modules start to sound the same and then beyond that, get harsh and start feeding-back like my ex wife on child support issues. (yah, I have the kids)

Anyone else have a take on my crazy idea?

I used to have 3 of the mts systems- a RM100 head, a RM100 combo and the RM20 combo.

As far as modded modules, I had a Jaded Faith recto, Friedman BE and a Salvation Matchvox.

The recto was alright, but not mind-blowing.

The BE sounded nice, but in order to get the tone I wanted from it, I had to re-bias my tubes to run a little cooler, which made the other modules sound bad.

The Salvation Matchvox was my favorite of my modded mods. It had vox and matchless tones in spades and could go from shimmering cleans to in your face alt rock distortion. It sounded great for everything.

I also really liked the stock 1086.

I really like the MTS stuff, but it got to a point where I was buying more modules than I could afford and it was a money pit. Other than that, the only real downside was how much it all weighed. The RM100 combo weighed close to a 125 pounds. even with wheels on the amp it was hard to move around. Carrying it upstairs was nightmare.

I had a Jaded Recto too. It was awesome. Hes got a killer plexi mod too

why hasn't someone pushed the envelope and modified the MTS module platform to accomodate another gain stage or two?
Salvo has incorporated an extra pot, that is pushing envelops

all of the modules start to sound the same
Stock hi gainers, yes
But if you get modded mods from different people, they sound drastically different. A 1086 compared to a 1087 to a 1666 is light years apart in tone, feel, everything

There is some crossover in the hi gainers if you stick with one source, but mix it up and there is huge variety

Hi Ray,

thanks for responding. I've talked with other MTS folks about this and we agree about the sounds getting to the same endpoint the further out you get, admittedly, I don't have a Salvation Mod, but aside from my current lineup of stock modules, I do have high-gain mods from the others mentioned in this thread. I think to get into the fatter, thicker sounding tones of the Diezels, PT100s etc, that more 12AX7's need to be employed. I hear mentioned that is why some folks keep moving away from the MTS lineip, to find that thicker sounding tone.

Interesting...I find Pete's work to be very thick, but I haven't played many amps out of the mainstream. Pete's 1087 and Mark modules are oozing with cool thickness.

You'll have to try a Salvation, his modern hi gain is fantastic. I wouldn't call it thick, but totally aggressive and waaay improved on the stocks. He strips out the components and starts from scratch, so if there is a way to jam in more gain stages, he would be the one

I guess thats the crux to the matter, preference. Don't get me wrong, I like my mods, a lot, but I believe that there is a reason that you don't hear a Herbert Module, or an OD100se+, but those are some of the most sought after tones at this time, but way of of most people's reach in these difficult economic times.
