I went over to see Curt (Chubtone) and Jay over a Squid today to check out "what the fuck" is with all the hype over these San Dimas/SoCal Charvels?!

....DAYUM.

'k - I get it. :inlove:

Fast neck, floyd, decent fret dress, TIGHT neck pocket, maple neck, black hardware, SD pup's....yeah I'm slow, but I GET it now! :rawk:

Oh, and BTW, Curt and Jay are about the coolest, most chill dudes around. Zero attitude, just very, very nice people. (thanks Curt and Jay for letting me hang!)

Back to the Charvels. Played Inca Gold (with p/g and DiMarzios), 2 Black 2H San Dimas', and Jay's Slime green. Amp was the Lynch box, with the SL+, Ultra and another preamp.

The SD's (JB in the bridge) was the shit for me - cuts through like a fart in a hot elevator   but not ice pick.

Jay even whipped out a brand new San Dimas to demonstrate that there was no "more" mojo in the new vs the older (series 1 to be exact).

I will say that Jay's San Dimas Charvels were NICELY broken in - and no amount of $$$'s would convince Jay to sell   :D

Hitting up the wife for "permission" to bring home another guitar (Charvel San Dimas) today    Probably going to cost me an Anderson and other shit....(understand it's not about the $$$'s - it's about the GAS addiction and how she deters this "kind" of behavior)

wish me luck - if things go well I oughta have a new Charvel to wank on this weekend!
mike.

warning, charvel's are like crack...a real bad addiction. once you buy one you're on the road to hating all other guitars due to their plastic feeling poly coated necks. then you'll end up like me with 9 charvels and 1 les paul that i look at daily and wonder why i haven't sold it to fund a 10th charvel

Mike-

If you're selling any Andys, hit me up :D

Thanks buddy!

Mike, It was cool to see you (again I think) and hang with you and talk guitars, bands and players. It was amazing how on the same page we are as far as players and bands and stuff. It was very cool hearing Mikes back in the day stories too. He saw everyone who was anyone in LA back then. Great fun talking about that stuff! I just now finished filling out the four end of quarter tax reports and payments that have to be filed today by 6pm. We were having so much fun talking about that stuff that I forgot that sometimes when I'm at work I have to work.

Anyway, good luck with the wife! I don't have to worry about you being back at some point. That guitar and that neck is going to work on you and work on you and work on you. It did the same to me. They rendered me completely uninterested in my Suhr's.

Did Curt take you into his back room to view his killer Tom Kieffer shrine?

  I just read this thread and I can't really advise anyone about the perils of the draw of charvels.
The reason being, I have one on it's way from Kurt to me right dayum now!
So I caved in and embraced the weakness!
I am currently trying to 'JUST DECIDE '..........Which one of the charvels to call Kurt and have sent next.

My local used gear shop had two first run (of the new batches) San Dimas models for something like 600 bucks a pop sitting around for a while. I really regret not grabbing one of them :aww:

Curt, my BAD for keeping you from business for so long. I too rushed back to a stack of emails and v/mails - which what I've got to get to now! However, it was very cool reminiscing about the 80's and 80's shredders! On the Charvel...it's only a matter of whether I see you tomorrow or on Sunday!!
mike

PS - I totally forgot to mention the MIGHTY MET - 94.7 KMET (as in Paraquat Kelly, and "little bit of heaven, 94.7...KMET...twiddle dee....")- which was flying the banner for LA bands at least 5 years before 105.5 KNAC PURE ROCK was born!

Did it seem in any way I cared about working on tax papers when we were having such a cool conversation? I'd still be standing there right now if I could, going "what about Steve McKnight in Cry Wolf and Joe Holmes in Terriff and ...... and ....... and .........

No worries Mike. One of the most fun conversations I've had in a while. Thanks for that. I am old hat at these tax papers too. I've been in business almost 17 years and when I asked an accountant how much they wanted to do these for me every quarter I decided to learn to do it myself. There's really nothing to it.

No one sees the Kiefer shrine. Ever since Lost Boys and Flatliners I have had a huge mancrush on him. :D

We'll see what you think Hollywood. There is a ton of hype on these guitars on Rig-Talk and I think it is important to temper that with a "for what they cost" sort of mentality. Then if it grows on you like they have on several of us great. I always worry when they go from perfect, dry, spring time weather here all the way across country after i give them a set up. Who knows what lurks in the humidity filled warehouse that Fed Ex might have it sitting in? That always worries me that the neck will go goofy but most of my midwest and east coast guys seem resigned to a guitar possibly needing a tweak once it acclimates.

Some of y'all might not know me, but I created a nice little stir about Charvels recently. They are totally addicting and especially any of them that are older and some of the new custom shops. I'm up to six and one Atlas Les Paul style that parntz145 got me on the phone to talk me into buying, which of course I did because he can sell his ass off and also that I'm quite sellable! Paulie's turned into one of my best friends and we talk on the phone about everyday. But back to the Charvels, I've got a buddy that goes by 'andy cain' on Ebay and wherever else he advertises his sales, but he's got a collection of Charvels/custom Jacksons that would make your jaw drop, and they're all out for display now! He used to have about 2/3's out, but now they're all out with a Diezel Herbert and 2 Marshall 4X12's and a Diezel Einstein with 2 Marshall 4X12's, all in one room! It's totally heaven to go over there, and I pickup whatever guitar I want out of the 30 plus to select from and play to my heart's content. Then I say, I think I like these 2, can I take them home to play and bring them right back to you in a week and decide what I want to buy? And he says, sure man, no problem. I tell you, he's like a crack dealer!!! Anyway, I've never seen anything like it in my life.

That name sounded familiar and I checked back on some of my buys on Ebay and did indeed buy a guitar from him.

For the life of me I cant remember what it was!
I think it might of been a Demartini Crossed Swords...but not sure.
Whatever it was it was back in Jan of 2009. I am pretty picky and look only for certain styles of guitars.....so I am sure it was a Charvel or ESP , Jackson or something along those lines.
I have bought and sold so many guitars it would make your head spin!

That flat black wildcard you sent me went from hot and dry California to hot and humid Hawaii. Opened the box and guitar was in perfect tune. Haven't had to mess with the neck at all. I was a little worried about the unfinished neck but it is super stable. Just blocked the trem and slapped a d-tuna on it.
Great guitar, super resonant and just a blast to play.

Aloha, Rob.

Rob,
I'm glad you like it buddy. The neck isn't truly unfinished, but finished with gun stock oil which gives it that raw smooth feel which is just unbeatable IMO. And it only feels better and better the more you play it and periodically #0000 steel wool it. Wait until the neck has a few hundred hours on it.
