Those nicks were unintentional and each one saddened me...but look how far I've come now. :D

I really don't get the whole "relic" thing... if they are genuine battle scars, dings, scrapes, etc.. then cool, more mojo, but to intentionally put them there? It's like buying pre-ripped jeans and trying to look cool. That being said, it does look cool.

When I bought it, I knew that one day I'd trash it, love those really worn looking strats...it just happened quicker than I thought. :D

I'm thinking of soaking the bare wood parts with soy sauce to darken them up...but I may get out-of-the-blue cravings for rice on stage.

Look great, Randy. Reminds me of my beater guitar..

It consists of an old strat body that I played for about six years. When I first built it in '91, I put a Floyd on it, and strung it with 9's. Then in '97, I switched to 10's.. Well, the increased tension ripped the Floyd studs forward, pretty much ruining the body. It's hung on my shop wall for 13 years, and glared at me the entire time. So just this winter I decided to route out the broken wood in front of the trem and replace it. It came out great, and sounds just as I remember it. I ordered a new pickguard from Terrapin, as the one in the picture is the original pickguard I used with the Floyd. Since I never plug it in, other than to test amps that I'm fixing for customers, I only wired up the middle pickup. In fact, I never even routed out the bridge pickup from the big block of I would I replaced in front of the trem.

Are you talking to Randy or me? Because mine's a real relic, with 6 years of gig abuse.

And if you're talking to Randy, I think it's pretty darn good job for his first!

The fretboard I don't like, but hopefully, as you say, it will look better when you play it more...

Kinda reminds me of my Nash:

I do too! I'll tell ya - Nash gets crap for not making his own parts, but this is the best setup/playing strat I've had and the Lollars are great pickups...

Nice one Steve!

I see what you mean about the fretboard wear. It's also way too clean to look old right now. Lots of playing time and spilt beer will grunge it up nice. I might try working off a bit more finish from the fretboard so the whole neck starts getting that darkened look....sexy. :inlove:

That dropping a set of keys all over it idea was great...it has some nice dings all over it now.

I did it...it darkened the new white looking wood a bit...the rest of the grunging will be out on gigs.

It's nice to have a guitar you don't have to baby at all...as long as the neck does break, it's good.

Always wanted to try creating an old, beat-up looking strat. It was a nice day, so I brought the guitar with me to the backyard with some chisels, sandpaper and 0000 steel wool and began destroying it. :D

I think it turned out pretty well for my first attempt...the fretboard will look better once the bare wood parts start darkening from playing.

I too like stuff that looks old a beat up and who wants to wait for thirty years to pass until it does?

I like it it looks better than if it were brand new.

heres my lefty mutant RG.

Japanese body, japanese trem, newly replaced japanese J craft neck, MCP pickups and my own Relic process!

I used keys, hammers, wrenches , a knife, sandpaper a metal rod and tossed it around on the concrete like a beach ball.

I love her! :inlove:

I dig it! Looks old to me.

It looks cool!!
What I done....was have an old Jackson. And...its my only player.
I been rocking the shit out of it and well....just kinda tossing it around.
Not "BEATING ON IT" but not babying it either.
Tossing it in the stand between songs....playing it HARD......
its getting some kicks on it....but I think to get the 'natural' reliced it would take YEARS AND YEARS of hard playing unless you do it yourself.
your guitar is looking good my man!!
If you do a "smoking hot" solo.....and I smell the soy sauce.....dont blame me when I come up after the show with some steamed rice and veggies.... :D

Try diluted tea. I know some guys who've used that to darken wood.

I dig it...adjusted the truss rod and setup the intonation and she plays way better with the finish off the back of the neck. I would use this guitar alot now.
I did try rubbing some soy sauce on it and it darkened up the light wood a bit, but it smells a bit like pee or something now. :D

I'll try that too...maybe it'll cover the pee smell.
