As a huge Satriani fan, I have to admit that his last couple of albums have been kind of meh. I'm hoping this new album is kind of a return to his roots. It's called "What Happens Next," and is due for release in January.

Yeah, the last one I dug for the most part was Super Colossal......love Satch though for sure & looking forward to hopefully a killer album!

Yeah, A Cool New Way and Made of Tears are a couple of my favorite from that album. I couldn't really latch on to Black Swans/Wormhole Wizards, Shockwave Supernova, or Unstoppable Momentum, so Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock was the last Satch album that was really great all around. His last three albums were marginally more interesting than Engines of Creation, but not by much. I was thinking maybe he got caught up too much in the Chickenfoot stuff so maybe now his new album will rock.

I see the new G3 tour has Satch, Petrucci, and Phil Collen. I just don't understand that at all.

I didn't know Phil Collen could hang with players like that. It might be interesting. Satch has toured with Petrucci before, so nothing odd about that. I think Satch and Petrucci even toured with Yngwie for a while.

Yeah, I don't understand Phil Collen playing on the G3 tour at all  I look forward to being proven wrong :D

You wont be. No way Phil can hang with the other two.

I've watched Phil before and thought his lead playing was not that good, but the dude is a legend, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. We'll see. Some dudes aren't great players but have a great sense of rhythm, so who knows what he'll bring. Satch is a god, so I'm sure whatever he saw in Phil makes him worthy -- at least of rhythm guitar.

I don't know if Vivian could hang with Satch and Petrucci, and Viv is AWESOME.

Vivian Campbell, yeah, great player, but not G3 material. Jake E. Lee... mmm, better chance than Vivian. Joe Bonamassa would have been great and so would a TON of modern rock and metal guitarists. Michael Schenker would be great.

I love Satch, but I haven't listened to instrumental guitar music in about 20 years.

I wish him the best.

Edit: I did listen to Guthrie for a bit.

When I first read this I thought, Phil Collins? WTF?....

Well if this is a preview of the new G3, then 1/3 of the lineup will be quite disappointing for those expecting guitar wizardry. George Lynch gets shit on all the time, so I can only imagine what will be said about Phil... fast forward to around 2:00 mark -- benefit of the doubt given because the tele dude was a 2 minute bore, so Phil didn't exactly come in on a stimulating intro.

I am a Satch fanboy (I don't apologize for that fact) and I am looking forward to this new release and G3. Personally, I have really liked his newer releases. I think I am in the minority as most like his early stuff more. Don't get me wrong...The Extremist and Crystal Planet are some of my favorite releases but I really like the last four or five albums. I have over listened to Surfing and Flying over the years and I am bored to tears by it. He is such a great live player and he may not play with the same fire as he did when he was young but I love where he is at.

I'm going to G3 and will reserve my opinion on Phil Collen. I like that Joe tries new players. We will see. I saw Def Leppard recently and I thought Vivian was heads and shoulders above him. I don't mean that as any offense towards Phil.

G3...Must be a dimarzio connection. Would rather see vivian campbell, or neither :)

Woofy McSnoozefest...Satch was really the only interesting, tasteful solo here.

No surprise.......Vivian has always been head & shoulders better than Phil......I'm sure Phil has written some cool parts for some Leppard tunes, but he'll never be the player Vivian is

Yeah, Phil has always written great parts/songs and deserves full respect as a musician. Great singer too, but as an instrumental guitar player?

He'd be great if he did the band thing and sang through the gig.

New video of one of the songs. Badass! Old Satch has returned!
