Went and saw Tesla the other night. Been a fan since the 1st album came out 25 years ago (hard to believe), but this was my 1st time seeing them. All I can say is WOW!!!! They completely kicked ass all night long. Frank Hannon's tone was incredible, sounded very similar to a Jose-type mod, absolutely killer - the type of tone I chase after in my rig. Plus playing was spot on, didn't miss a lick, awesome. David Rude had a great sounding rig too, and his playing was great too, but Frank Hannon was jaw-dropping. Jeff Keith sounded as good as the 1st album, hasn't lost anything.

If these guys are rolling through your town and you are even a mild fan you really need to go. I am not impressed easily as I have seen many of the monsters of rock, but these guys are the real deal.

Two thumbs up! I really need to find out what's in Frank Hannon's rig!! His tone is right up there with Aldrich's and Joe Holmes IMO.

i was learning what you give a few nights ago noodling around by ear. tesla is the shit, thanks for the heads up

what acoustic did they use for the intro?

Huge fan of Tesla....Frank is a great player and has monster tone...seen 'em a few times both with and without Tommy S....I really like his playing so miss it when he's not there.

I think Jeff's voice has got a little squeakier over the years but they still kick it live.

They didn't - was one of the newer songs. Supposedly they have a new album coming in July.

Frank sounds great no matter what he plays. I've seen them many time and he always rocks. First time I saw them with Tommy still in the band they had a shit ton of vintage gear mainly Marshall and Hiwatt. Next few times I saw them Frank was playing thru JCM900's and Dave was playing thru a Slash/Jubilee amps. Last I saw he was using the Vintage Modern or the JVM I think.

Looks like maybe some JCM800s??

Actually the audio didn't come through too bad on that clip, sounds pretty good. You can hear that Jose-type "midrange drone" (best way I can describe a sound)on the A chords. That's my favorite tone, period!!! It is also really nice to see some 80's players still be able to kill their licks, unlike recent disappointments from EVH and Lynch for example :(

Frank's main amp was behind him to the right which you really couldn't see in this video. It did have a red LED roughly in the middle, not in line with JCM 800 2205/2210's. One row of knobs, so not a JVM. All I know is that in 25 years of playing Marshalls I've never heard a stock one sound anywhere in the ballpark of tone that he's getting, even with the best tubes, pedals, pickups, etc. If that is an off the shelf amp I'm buying it tomorrow!

I love Tesla. I am jealous. Hopefully they will come this way.

The amps I see on stage all look like 900's. Probably rented backline since Dave uses the Slash amps.

On their latest live DVD, Frank is using JVM's. Not sure what Dave is using. Maybe JCM800s.

I was at that show. They both used JCM 900's through what were likely Greenback loaded Marshalls. The tone didn't blow me away, but the playing did! Unfortunately, sound men like to overdrive PA's when a "big name" comes to the smaller venues, and it gets "whumpy", and sounds like hell. I wore earplugs that night - thank God.

Great show. They still have it. Some of the bands out today REALLY need to watch bands like this and take note of how to be PRO. Sound good. Play good. Keep your chops up. Don't rely on "studio magic" to sound like a band. Too .many bands put out studio stuff, but can't hang live. These guys just KILLED from an overall standpoint

Saw them twice..
back before they "blew up" on the David Lee Roth "eat em and Smile" tour...(the best!!)
Then again when they opened for Def Leppard on Hysteria tour.
Liked them better the 1st time.....

Great stuff, I hope they come this way soon. Last time I saw them, (which was a long time ago) they were using modded JMP's, which sounded fantastic live
I have no idea what they are using now

Last I saw of them Jeff sounded like Froggie from the Lil' Rascals...he was awful. I actually felt sorry for him :aww:

Tesla played Columbia, MD/Merriweather Post Pavilion with the M3 Rock Festival.
IMO Tesla out rocked Whitesnake. Frank was sounding very very good, Jeff Keith sounded good too.
Whitesnake headlined and played all the good old songs but played quite a few from the last two albums...too many for me.
Other bands I saw, Great White, Mr. Big (Gilbert/Sheenan were on fire), Sebastian Bach, Black N Blue, Lita Ford, and a few others. Was quite a good festival at a great venue. I'm sure Rupe will chime in as he was there too.
I've seen Tesla 5 times and this was the first time Frank whipped out a Flying V...it Rocked!

I just won tickets the other night for July 21st at the HOB in Chicago. Gonna be sweet. I saw them last year too. Definately a great live band.
