I'm trying to sell a preamp on Craiglist and someone sent me this:

Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy it now for my In-law and i will be offering $500 .Am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want it to be a surprise for my In-law so i wont let her know anything about it until it gets delivered to her, i am sure she will be more than happy with it. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank account attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for it and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it up after i have made the payments...

I think it might be a scam but not sure to what end.

Thoughts?

If someone emails you and never directly addresses the item by name, then it's probably going to be a scam. It's another giveaway if they ask you to follow certain procedures to receive payment. Because of PayPal's weak refund policy, it's no longer a safe method to sell online, because it's easy for anybody to just reclaim the money.

It was fairly clear that that was a scam before I was halfway through teh first line.

You need to get your scam-dar more finely tuned man!

My spidey sense tingled when I read that the preamp was a gift for his mother in law   but payment through paypal kind of threw me off. Usually its a cheque or a wire transfer.

Their syntax is a dead giveaway.

Big scam. I always laugh when I see "advert" and "pick up agent". Classic!

Scam, and one that especially irritates me. I work offshore on the rigs and a lot of the time i have to send emails like this out if i want to pay for something or buy something.

SCAM!! These fucking assholes! I'm so sick of this shit. They also fish to get your email address. I get Viagra and other pharmacy shit emails all the time now, I know its from the dicks on Craiglist. Shittiest thing is I've had a boner now for 3 months and I had to cut a hole in my mattress because I like to sleep on my stomach!! :D ;)

I thought the same thing. Who used the word "advert"?

Its a scam.... run. Or you can have fun with them.... tell them you are selling several items and which item are they looking at. Then list weird items like, dildos, buttplugs.... etc

A map of Alaska, a small jewelery bead, a used toothbrush....
