I went to the MSG / Lynch Mob show last night and was struck by the contrasts in rigs and how they came across in the context of a live show.
Lynch had 3 stacks with 3 amp heads on each one, I'm not sure what was actually being used, most everything was powered up. Boutique gear, including some stuff that I've never heard of. He had a big pedalboard and a tech who was pushing buttons for him, handing him new guitars every couple of songs, lighting cigarettes for him, etc. Lynch's tone sounded great (fat punchy high gain Marshall tone) during the soundcheck and in between songs on it's own but was totally lost in the mix during songs. When the whole band was playing I couldn't really make out what he was doing. Moving around the venue didn't help much but getting closer to the stage helped a little. It was a boring show but then again I haven't been a fan since Dokken really.
Schenker had 2 Marshall stacks of which one was a backup. They were those channel switching JCM800 heads. He had a cobbled-together pedalboard with a few Boss pedals and a camo wah. He never changed guitars once during the whole show. His tone sounded absolutely killer. Sat perfectly in the mix. A little bit higher gain that what I've heard out of him in the past but similar to the MSG recordings. He has some personal problems evidently but it isn't affecting his playing these days it seems. He was on fire. I highly recommend checking this show out if it comes near you.

My friend and I are going to see them in Seattle soon. I'm curious to hear their amps. 6 amp heads? Come on now. He should be able to play his whole set with one, maybe two of his lynch box heads. 3 modules each right? and a couple of pedals. I like the keep it simple approach myself. To quote the animated video someone posted, "he could play with a Peavey Bandit and nobody(well, few) would know the difference". I'd like to think that he will still sound like Lynch even with a simple set up. Shit, Might even sound better without all those fancy amps fucking it up.

I agree 100% . Got to talk to George a bit after the show since he made a remark about my Diezel shirt . Told him I also had a Herbert. Was disappointed with his sound with the band

Saw Schenker maybe 6 times over the past 30 or so years and he absolutely killed . I was wondering how he feels playing Doctor Doctor and Lights Out EVERY NIGHT   Was surprised that his bass player that played with him at Irving Plaza was the president / owner of Dean guitars ..

I believe there was 8 or 9 amp heads. Lynchbox, Diezel, 2 Marsha, 2 Sullivans, a Naylor, and something else I'm forgetting. The odd thing is that there was only 3 cabs. What was on and what was a backup? Everything seemed powered up?

I've seen Schenker twice and both times those 2205's were just killing! I've seen Lynch a couple times and have never cared for the tone.

I saw Lynch Mob in Oct 08 in LA at the Key Club in Hollyweird.
He played a Soldano and the 68 Plexi with an A/B switch. Had the Lynch Box same as always powered up no cord lugged in.
Pedal board with maybe 8 pedals but no one pushing them for him. Come on his stuff isn't that complicated  .

They sounded pretty good that night. Even the Mr. Scary came off well.

Sounds like he is fucking around with too much shit.

That sounds like a reasonable rig. But what's up with the 6-9 amps? WTF is up with players and their signature amps that they either play very little if at all? To me it seems like a lot of the best tones my favorite players had were accomplished with a fraction of stuff they use now. Maybe they think they need a different amp for each song. When I was gigging regularly waaay back in the late 80's early 90's almost every guitar player I knew played 1 amp and still got killer tones. A few guys had the exact amp I had yet we didn't sound the same at all. Maybe you just got to make sure your guitar tech/roadie earns their money.  Looking forward to seeing Lynch. Haven't seen him live since the Monsters of Rock tour.

He had that rig in Cleveland too. He had 4 cabs though. The Lynch Box cab sitting on a Orange cab but neither was mic'ed up. He also had 2 old Marshall cabs faced backwards.

At the Cleveland show, I had a bit of a hard time hearing Lynch I wasn't standing on his side though. I'm not sure how much of his sound was the Herbert he had on, but it looked to me like he was using channel 2 with the Mid Cut function on (Mid cut has its own blue LED). That tone when playing by oneself or maybe recording is KILLER, but I can see how it might become "lost in the mix." I prefer the tone of the Herbert without the Mid cut, and never thought George's tone was all that "scooped" to begin with. I couldn't see his pedal board, but he seemed to be futzing around with delays and flangers and whatnot.
