Ive owned 6: Custom 24s, CE24s, CE22s. I still have 4, anywhere from a '99-'06. Im not a fan of the direction their line seems to be going, and really not a fan of their SE models, but you are asking about real PRS guitars anyways.

IMO the 2011 and 2012 are much improved from the older ones. Matter of taste I guess.

I've got two

Standard 24
305

These have become my go to guitars. The Standard 24 covers the Humbucker side and 305 is the single coil.

The STD 24 has a rotary knob for PUP selection and I prefer a Blade Switch. But, the guitar plays great and sounds no less.

The Std24 has 9's and the 305 has 10's

So which prs would be best for a strat guy? I am mainly talking feel, not so much tone.

I would suggest trying a few out. They make a few lemons, just like Gibson. The ones that work are amazing.

I just re-worked mine today... I haven't been able to bond with my Custom 24 that much, as my technique (or lack thereof) wouldn't agree with the damn thing.

But I have found a way that works for me. I don't know if it's damaging to the guitar... But it's what works for me. It used to have tuning issues, and the tension was not to my liking really... Anyway:

I fitted 11's on it. They feel like 10's on a Strat.

I have lowered the bridge right down to the body so it's no longer able to bend notes up. The back plate behind the trem, I have screwed all the way back into the body so it touches the wall.
I now have a tension that I really like, it sustains well, and holds it tune.

One of the best sounding, worst playing guitars ever.
Interesting. As I've heard the opposite of this too - best playing worst sounding (due to the anemic pups typical in a PRS) :dunno:

Found the perfect PRS, Mo....if you want to spend as much as you would on a smaller Audi :D ...check out that top!

Daaaaaaaaaayum!! :inlove:

She shur is purdy... But hey, it's gotta "sound" right, ya know?

Bottom line is I gotsta try a few of these out. Just to get to know if I like 'em. The reason I'm interested is that they seem to have a worldwide approval and acceptance, rarely if ever a complaint or issue with quality or consistency; flexible soundscapes, lighter than Lesters, etc. I love my Lesters, but there's a chance I may have to thin the heard dramatically due to a possible geographic relocation in the next year or so. Maybe I'll just shove everything into storage, but ya, it would be great to have only 2 or 3 guitars. Not 12+

Peace Cats,
Mo

My thought would be:
2 LP
2 Tele
2 Strats
1 PRS or 1 of the strat versions and 1 of the LP versions

So I would be up to 7 or 8 :) but 1 of each works also

This is not helping

I've been playing PRS since 97/98, just really easy guitars to play and stay in tune.
I've currently got 2 I use and abuse:

- 97' Custom 24, wide thin neck, stock pickups, 5 way rotary, tremolo, poly finish
- SC245 Limited, Madagascar rosewood wide fat neck, artist top,3 way toggle, adjustable stoptail, thin nitro finish.

I like the 25" scale on PRS, does get a touch tight with 24 frets but used to it now I guess. I think you can't really go wrong with a McCarty, they have the thicker mahogany back which adds a little more thickness to the sound.

The SC245 is a great guitar and my current favourite. I had it refretted with jumbo stainless steel frets, bone nut and reworked the bridge to get it a little more resonant. Really sings.

Many folks either love or loathe the pickups, I don't mind them, I like the 5909's as a current production stock pickup but an upgrade can really bring it to life.

My only gripe with this brand is the price, I think you get a great instrument for the bucks but you can quickly find yourself in deep waters financially for frills that don't necessarily make it that much better. A good stock instrument and a visit to your local luthier with some minor upgrades will put it in private stock category.

Depending on your aesthetic appeal, if tops are your thing you need not look past a 10 top or artist package. All the other parts, technology etc are the same that you can change/do yourself.

PRS has a tendency to do "limited runs" of their instruments. This is where you keep an eye out for what your after in my experience. Dealers do a shop run with all the great features that are usually reserved for private stock guitars with a twist at a good compromise, ie nice tops, different finish options, variations of woods, select colours which are great value compared to other similarly spec'd instruments at higher price points.

As a ex BAM member I've seen and played a few hundred PRSi, I think you need to spend some time finding the right combination that works for you without getting too caught up in all the bling.

I eehave three Custom 24s: a '97, an '05 and an '08. The '97 sounds a little bit clearer than the '05 (maybe it's because I put RS Guitarworks kit in it) and the '08 has the 57/08 pups so it' s a bit different than the other two. I love the feel and sound of all three however I'm thinking about snagging some 59/09 pups at some point in time. The '08 has a three way toggle and a push/pull tone pot but I prefer the tones you can get with the five way rotary switch, I haven't found using it to be a whole lot harder to use than a blade switch, even under sweaty live playing conditions.

The '97 and '05 have the regular neck carve and the '08 has the wide thin neck carve. I prefer the regular neck carve but I find all three carves to pretty comfortable and I don't have any issues going back and forth between any of them. The 10" radius fingerboard feels really good too. I can't recall what the factory spec for the action is but it calls for a very straight neck and very low action. Too low for my tastes. My necks are very straight with almost no relief but my actioj is 4/64ths on the bass side going down to 3/64ths on the treble side. Strings are EB Cobalts 11-48.

I find the trem to stay in tune fairly well, sometimes I have to give the G or B string a quick little tug sometimes but not having to deal with a locking nut and fine tuners kinda balances things out for me.

I gotta admit I'm a 10 top and birds kinda guy but I'm not afraid of scratching or dinging 'em 'cause they're made to be played. Their finish work is pretty awesome and their consistency is way, way better than Gibson.

Feel free to PM me if you want.

Martin

Ya, seems I best be demoing these to really know if I'm in or out.

Seem like solid guitars (no pun intended).

Peace! :salute:

I have a black grey flame 07 custom 22, bought it on the spot, best neck I've ever played, OK the pup's were a bit dull and I hate the bird thing but superb all round guitar, play anything on it.

Put a set of BKP's and did the toggle mod and it really filled the sound out and gave it some bottom, not all the way to a lester but not far off. Super comfy, never had a trem guitar that stays in tune so good, I play every day and tune up about once a month if that.

Doubt I'll ever move it on, probably cos it's not worth a turd now, but can't see me finding another workhorse player this good. Got an SC250 also but too close to a les paul and although fit, finish and playability are all perfect, it's just missing whatever it is a really good Gibby has, know what I mean?

like all other mfg's, you can get a good one or a not so good one. best PRS I owned was a McCarty all Korina. sounded so good, like a moron I sold it for something else...
