I am thinking about a new amp , a quickrod or promod. I know what a surprise, anway the splawn clips sound good but I keep reading about changes like clean channel, loop volume etc.
Can someone let me know differences and how to ID them?
Is loop volume a pot or a line/instrument level?

I love Splawn amps.. Im using a modded marshall right now, which is basically a pro mod and is my favorite Splawn I have tried so far.. Really like the extra punch and headroom with the KT88s.

The older Splawns with the 3 pre amp tubs have the old clean channel. You can tell if it has the newer clean by if it has the 4th pre amp tube. Not sure of any loop mods but I think he did something new for the 2010 models.. In 09 was when he started using the volume loop mod.. Anything pre 09 won't have that.

Like the above post stated the old clean channel model had three preamp tubes. When they went to the new clean channel, a 4th preamp tube was added. Some have said that when they went to the new clean channel that the overdrive channel was effected a little bit. This would be on '08 and '09 models. I have not received confirmation on this being true. The new '10 models have a volume knob in the loop and that makes a huge difference for playing at low volumes and supposedly the slightly less agressive and saturated sound in the '08 and '09 models was addresssed in the 2010.

The one I have is an '08 but as soon as I can I'm going to get a '10 because that volume knob in the loop is worth it IMO.

I've had a Quickrod for a couple of years now. To me, it's basically a 2203 with a bad case of PMS. It's very marshally and on lower gain settings it's got a classic Marshall tone.

I would highly recommend a Splawn cab as well. It's really tuned to bring the most out of the amp.

Nice amps, i been a fan of them for the last 5 yrs. my fav is my nitro with kt88 but i also have a 2010 quickrod and i like it alot, everytime theres a splawn thread theres always a few pricks that try and add a little drama about the bible verse or the mids, who cares.

It seems about once a month someone gets a Splawn itch.

The '09 QR is the first with the volume effects loop on the back. People complained and they did some updates to the 2010 model. First, being the effects loop is much more transparent and sounds exactly the same engaged as disengaged. Second, being they added a slight bit more gain in the amp over all. Third, which is not amp effected is they have better lit LEDs in the foot switch.

I absolutely love my QR! I changed V2 and V3 pre's with Tungsol's. I have Sino's throughout the rest. The amp retained aggression and bite but made it a little smoother.

I recommend picking up a 2010 QR with the updates and warranty. I have played an '08 and an '09 QR, and I prefer my 2010 above those.

P.S. buy a Splawn cab too or get a vintage Marshall with Blackbacks

My first Splawn was a QR and I LOVE IT! (Didn't know about the bible verse and really don't care).

Love the QR so much I bought bubbastain's white Nitro and LOVE IT. Different sound, but equally great. Thinking about changing it from EL34 to KT88 because everyone seems to think that's the magic combination, and I've got great results from the last two power tube swaps I did:

Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MK II: EL34 to EL34B (from a Diezel VH4)---BOOM!!! Like a totally new, different, MONSTER amp!!

Diezel VH4: EL34B to 6550--again--great tone difference--much more grind and thump.

Any info on Nitro differences between EL34 and KT88 appreciated, especially info on how to "self-modicate."

I love my Quick Rod. I think mines an 06. Updated clean, no loop volume though. Mine has some religious scribblings inside,You have to pull the chassis to see it. I could care less. The amp is so awesome there could be a picture of a two goats fucking inside and I wouldn't care.

I've owned the pre-clean updated 3 pre tube QR, the updated 4 pre Quickrod, an 08 KT77 Nitro, and now a 2010 KT88 Nitro. IMO, something did change on the OD between the 3 pre quickrods and the 4 pre updated clean models. I traded mine for an updated clean, and was pissed I ever did the trade after getting some time with it. Should have known better, why would anyone trade an older amp for a brand new one. There was something just more aggressive about the 3 pre. The clean was definitely better on the 4 pre models however. Besides the obvious extra preamp tube, another thing to look for was the input jack was lower on the pre-updated models as I recall. From talking to owners of the new 2010 models with the loop vol, the OD difference was addressed, so it sounds more like the 3 pre versions, just with a better clean. I would like to try another one now, I really loved my old 3 pre model. The new ones have a pot for the loop vol level, a +4/-10dB switch for matching line level devices, and a bypass button which takes it out of the circuit. There are also some older models, before the 3 preamp versions, which didn't have the 3 gears. The gears are a very handy feature on the QR/PM, definitely worth having IMO.

About the bible verses in the amp, it's really no big deal. I think all four of mine had "Roman 10:13" writtin inside on the chassis with a marker IIRC. You'll never see it unless you have it apart, and most people probably wouldn't even know what it meant.

They are great amps man. Definitely a love hate thing though, some people love the sound, some people not so much. The mids are so prevalent, if you don't dig the sound, you won't like the amp at all. If you do however, you will really love the amp.

AFAIK, the gears are only foot-switchable on the Competition/Pro Stock, and only 2 of the 3 gears as I recall, depending where the front panel control is set.

edit: forgot part of the question. If you get the new models with the built in loop vol, it's definitely playable at low volumes. The QR as I remember likes to have the preamp vol up above 9:00 to really get that great aggression, and without something lowering the volume, it can be very very unfriendly to bedrooms, lol. A trick though if it doesn't have the vol adjust in the loop, is to use a vol pedal or something with an output control in the loop.

I just got done playing mine in my house at bedroom volumes and is sounds great there too. I think most if not all amps sound best cranking though.

I am wondering what my QR would sound like with 6550's in it?

i wouldn't buy a splawn head for just playing at home, but that's just me. I think the splawn combo is really cool.

Just want to clarify something, having a bible verse in an amp does not bother me but having an amp called the "Quick Rod" kind of does.
