School me on the Fulltone OCD

I have one coming my way as result of a trade. It's a 3 month old mint V4 model. Love what I hear on youtube so far. I'm going to see how well it does boosting my gain channel, as well as possibly using it as a stand alone dirt box. Going to test it next to my MXR GT-OD to see which pedal will do which of the two jobs I mentioned.

So...what should I expect? Any tips? Any grievances?
 
I have V-1 and it is my favorite pedal, you will like it :thumbsup:
 
What are the differences through the various versions?
 
I have been most happy with it running at 18V. It makes it more touch-sensitive/reacts better to picking dynamics. The extra headroom sort of cuts the gain a little bit, but it tightens it up as well.

It boosts well, and likes being boosted just as much. Stand-alone, it's (what I would call) a mid-gain pedal. It'll do a lot of classic rock/rock/blues. Boosting a pretty dirty amp, it's a bit darker/meaner than a TS type of boost. Boosting it (on HP) with the gain up, it will do 80's hair/metal pretty well. I am currently running mine (on LP) between a FD2 and a Riot, so it can boost the amp, boost the Riot, or be boosted by the FD2.

I'm definitely not the authority on descriptive terms and common definitions, but I don't consider it a dyed-in-the-wool distortion, nor is it exactly an 'overdrive.' It will do distortion, but I think of it more as being between a distortion and the typical OD/TS. YMMV, of course.
 
Others will beg to differ, but the OCD got better as the versions went on.

V4 has more mids, less tubby bass, more useable gain range with no flub, smoother volume taper.

I had a V4. Sold it. Instantly regretted it and got another one.

The MXR GT-OD sounds like a really good tube screamer. The OCD sounds like an amp. But still boosts well into a dirt channel.

How do I run it in 18 volt mode? Is it just a flick of a switch? Do I need an 18V adapter? Two 9V's batteries?
 
I'm using a Pedal Power 2, with two 9V outs connected via a series cable. That will only work on a power supply with isolated DC outs, though. The cable costs about $10, but Fulltone has a little tutorial on how to make your own. I used the spare 'odd' cables (9V batter snap, polarity reverse, etc.) that came with the PP2 to make mine.

Fulltone also has a work-around using two 9V batteries, but that will sit outside of the pedal enclosure, I would imagine.

I have two V1's and a V2. I love the V1's. They sound killer and extremely transparent. It is my favorite boost for my Super Lead style amps AND my favorite boost for my Splawn Quick Rod.
