Scumback Speakers - Thumbs Up!

I still like V30's and Greenbacks and don't see changing any time soon. The last thing I need to do is start changing speakers in search for the perfect sound and waste more time tone chasing instead of moving forward as a musician. This gas thing really sucks. :D

Want to know how to get Jim twisted up?

Email and ask him what the Scumback model number is for a V30 replacement

V30's have their place and are probably the most widely used speaker on stages, worldwide. It is sort of a one size fits most anything speaker. But, there are much better alternatives out there that certain amps are built around. Scumbacks certainly opened my ears up to the differences.

There's a shit ton of difference between the 25 watt M's and the 65 watt. Most people like to order 65's for a 412 cab. I tried them and they were a little tight for me. Started ordering 25 watt M's and 30 watt H's and the difference is more than audible.
Exactly what I did. Compared the 65 and 25 watt M75s side by side in identical Bogner 4x12s, and while the 65s were good, the 25s are what I had been looking for all along.

I find it curious to see how that guy trashes V30's yet those speakers simply are on more albums in the last 20 years than probably anything. Scumback charges extra for a broken in speaker but guess what? V30's sound a million times better once they're broken in, is that taken into consideration? I simply see it as a case of, I don't sell it so it sucks.

why?

As was already mentioned Jim at Scumback has no plans to make a V30 clone, but I think he is asked about it often. Scumbacks are recreations of 'vintage' era Celestions. I think Jim has nightmares about his speakers being mixed with Vintage 30's.

I like V30's and sometimes they work well mixed, but sometimes it just better to stick with one speaker type in the cab.

Agreed.....they all got their place, which is what I was saying above. But, what the fuck do I know?

danyeo...allow me to explain...

Older (85-1990) V30's can sound great, newer ones, not so much IMO. I don't hate them, they don't "suck", they work well for certain tones/styles. Many of my clients are unhappy with the "annoying upper mid peak/spike I can't dial out of my tone!", but since I don't use them, that's not me, it's them saying that.

I don't copy any current Celestion speaker tones, period. Everything I offer is based on speakers made before 1982.

I'm friends with all of the US Celestion reps, John Sanchez, Rick Skillman, etc. They (and many other loudspeaker industry folks) were incredibly supportive and helpful to me when I had to take over production of my speakers earlier this year. In fact, Celestion still would like to work out a deal where I purchase frames from them. And they did offer to build my speakers for me as well (I declined that offer).

Long story short, I'm not a hater of the V30's because I don't make it, offer it, use them. I am a hater of the G12M-70 speakers, easily the worst Celestion I've ever heard. I'm not backing off that statement one inch, sir.

And for the record, James Lugo mixes three M75 65w with one V30 in his 69 spec cab at his studio, and it was used exclusively for that pickup shootout he did in 2009.

Hope that clears things up.

SteveK: for the 317,842nd time...I have no plans for a V30 clone, especially while it's still a current production speaker...so stop inciting the masses about this or you'll twist my knickers and keep me from building/shipping today. ;)

the main reason i bought scumbacks initially was because jim knew the characteristics of any old celestion you questioned him on, demonstrating an intimate first hand knowledge of what made them great. and once you've played through the oldies and tasted of that fruit, just like NOS tubes, game over. scumback restores those qualities to new speakers.

i can never remember the model numbers of what i have...m75...h65...i dunno i just asked jim what he thought would work in my bogner cab to replace a 75, and what to put in my tech 21 power engine to replace the stock 70/80 thing in there

sounds great to me!

I will back you up 1,000,000 Percent that the G12m-70 speaker were the worst celestion speakers Iv'e evern heard BAR NONE. Methinks that celestion was handing out pharmaceutical grade drugs to their designers at the time those speakers were fabricated ,but what do I know :D :hys:

Sounds good to me, however I still think new V30's can sound good after they're broken in. And as we have found out here, all V30's are not the same. Someone out up a clip of a British versus Chinese V30 and they were very very different and I was surprised that myself, and most others choose the Chinese one. Yes, I've hear some new Marshall 4x12's loaded with V30 that sound like ass, but look at the Bogner 4x12's. I like they sound really great. Well, the few Bogner 4x12' I played had some mileage so that might have helped.

I read in the Doyle book about how bad 70's are.

Hey danyeo, if the V30's work for you that's all that matters right?

V30's work, so do Greenbacks, 65's, sometimes H30's, M75's. I find I like more speakers out there than I dislike. I think the best Scumbacks I played were the M75's 25 watters. Call me crazy but I thought they sounded fatter than the 65 watters. M75's 65 watters sounded REALLY good in a Port City OS2x12. The V30/H30 worked in a Bogner OS2x12. I've never played a 4x12 loaded with a quad of Scumbacks though.

Sometimes it's the cab affecting the tone. Steve Stevens uses V30's. He had three mid 80's Marshall straight cabs filled with them. He switched over to three of my 69 spec straight cabs, and says they sound better in the Scumback cab than the Marshall cabs.

Have to say he sounded pretty effing good on Oct. 15th when I went to see him with Idol. So V30's have their place, no doubt about it.

I'm still waiting on the Scumback Blackbacks w/ 55 hz

Crap, I was supposed to email you, huh? Uh...Dave...the 55hz BB cones came in, and are shipping.

(Going to go run and hide now...)

Jim, I have a 4x12 with brand new Chinese V30 and G12m-70 speakers loaded in X pattern. The cab sounds a little too "warm and silky" . What Scumback clones do you make for these speakers? :poke:

I just heard that Jim did have a Scumback version of the G12M70 speakers. Its his new cow manure cone.

On a serious note, I don't think Jim can even do his reconing service on the G12M70 speakers, they are that bad. :bleh:

They use a 1.5" voice coil, which I don't have (or want) in any of my speakers. I did use them in my 10" line before I discontinued them.

I getting close to pulling the trigger on some Scumbacks for my Bogner OS 2X12, but I am debating which ones to get. So many choices!! :bash:

1. M75 (LHDC)/H75 (LHDC) 100W mix (recommend for mainly high gain metal)
2. M75 (LHDC)/H75 (LHDC) 65W mix
3. M75/H75 standard 100W mix
4. M75/H75 standard 65W mix
5. Two (2) M75 65w
6. Two (2) M75 100w
7. #5 or #6 with LHDC?

Currently using the Bogner cab with the Engl Savage (Cameron CCV-100 coming Jan or Feb 2012) and want to chnage from the V30s to something different and a pair that would suffice for both the Cameron and the Engl. Dont want to spend any more money on cabs. Do you really need LHDCs? And two 65 watt speakers should be fine for a 2X12 with the Cameron or the Engl since the speaker cab has 2 V30s in it.
