Its not a great recorded tone, but I’m on the fence too. Im testing the painkillers on the big rig tomorrow to see how they sound. After messing with the height this week, they are definitely clearer and less compressed, so on the live rig might be just right….? The jb still sounds great after all these years lol.Think I prefer the JB??
initially i agreed, and still could use the ol JB anytime really. but...., the painkiller was surgical tight on the low end through stereo 5150's, and sounded amazing in this guitar! im going to keep them in this one and put the jb/59 in my old japanese dinky. if i could get the jb as tight in the low end as the painkiller, it would be the goat! (for me)Great playing man, I prefer the JB after listening.
i need to look at this one.Try the Seymour Duncan Alternative - 8. SH-15. I think that will cover all that you're looking for.
Use a boost, TS9 or something??initially i agreed, and still could use the ol JB anytime really. but...., the painkiller was surgical tight on the low end through stereo 5150's, and sounded amazing in this guitar! im going to keep them in this one and put the jb/59 in my old japanese dinky. if i could get the jb as tight in the low end as the painkiller, it would be the goat! Another one you should look at is the Duncan Custom.i need to look at this one.
Oh wait a minute. The Dave Mustaine thrash factor pickups might just be that, a JB with a tighter low end. Or you can try those Tone Nerd pickups, the Roxy.initially i agreed, and still could use the ol JB anytime really. but...., the painkiller was surgical tight on the low end through stereo 5150's, and sounded amazing in this guitar! im going to keep them in this one and put the jb/59 in my old japanese dinky. if i could get the jb as tight in the low end as the painkiller, it would be the goat! im always using an od808, or a precision drive with the peaveys. it gets tight enough, im just being nit-picky and looking for the "perfect" metal pup lol. also tried the duncan custom again recently, and just didnt jive with it for metal.Use a boost, TS9 or something??
Try the Thrash Factor then, it's supposed to be a tighter JB.im always using an od808, or a precision drive with the peaveys. it gets tight enough, im just being nit-picky and looking for the "perfect" metal pup lol. also tried the duncan custom again recently, and just didnt jive with it for metal.
dude i sound nearly the same out of whatever amp im using at the moment. if i ever swap these heavy ass tube monsters again, it will be for another deliverance.Try the Thrash Factor then, it's supposed to be a tighter JB.
Oh, and if you want to get the perfect metal tone say goodbye to your 5150's lol. Just kidding, they're fine for what they do.
You probably sound nearly the same thru whatever pickup you're using at the moment too. It's those subtleties that make us want new gear. I Don't know I just find 5150's kinda buzzy and honky, but some make them sound alright. They seem to lack clarity at higher gain levels too.dude i sound nearly the same out of whatever amp im using at the moment. if i ever swap these heavy ass tube monsters again, it will be for another deliverance.
I love the the nazgul. Its in my charvel 3dr, and my jackson dinky. I just kind of wanted something different for this sls soloist i got. Glad I experimented though; the painkiller set ended up being what i was looking for in this guitar. But i as goad also, as i found out the jb really holds its own still.Nazgul is my favorite pickup. JB close second but all my guitars have Nazguls now.
totally different guitars so the change in sound has almost zero to do with the pickupSame. It was fatter.
I think i have a Nazgul with a Black Cover on it laying around that i need to sell.I love the the nazgul. Its in my charvel 3dr, and my jackson dinky. Agreed. However, the JB is fatter than the Nazgul IME even in the same guitar.totally different guitars so the change in sound has almost zero to do with the pickup
