Seeking Amp advise for SoundGarden Tribute Band

Hi guys,

I am in the process of Interviewing and auditioning for a national Sound Garden act here in the PNW. Of course nailing the parts is one thing, but they stressed to me the importance of getting a convincing tones close original as possible. Apparently that was a big issue with the last guy and one of several reasons they want a replacement. I am to be Thayill.

I am getting tone" I "like out ok of my JCM 900 studio, that I can Reeamp with PS100 to get more power.. but it does not really sound true to original. , but it does work for my old tattered ears, at least jamming to tracks. It might still be to pokey, even though it does not have the zing or cut like my 2204, or plexi. In this case its a good thing. Its an option.

I also Have. JVM 410 which I like at home at low volumes well enough, and ok for recording, but it sounds marginal live in band dong Rush, Maiden AIC etc. DSL 50, XTC, 2204, PLexi. all seem better!. JVM as feature filled and versatile sounds kinda feeble and brittle comparatively. most likely getting sold or traded

I have Bogner XTC 50. That might work? Maybe SLO 2 pedal into clean channel? Do you thinking getting a convincing Thayill tone is possible with above gear is doable????

Or do I have to get dual rectifier and if so which one???? I know Thai used Tremoverb but do not want a 90 pound combo.

Money IS an object. but willing to juggle to get the right thing.

any suggestions>. Current consideration are

90's Rectifier reissue
Mutiwatt
used tremoverb Head

curious would any of the 50 rectifier options get me there? Badlands etc. ? what about TC? zero experience with those.

Thanks much for valuable input.

You could just try one of the Rectifier pedals like the Wampler and run it into the effects loop of one of your other amps. I think that your JVM could easily pull off Soundgarden tones FWIW.

If ya like what you have, keep em. I think you can easily make some of those work. JUST GET something like a WAY HUGE swollen pickle fuzz pedal. Kim's tone has fuzz all over it. It's similar to Billy Corgan's tone on Siamese Dream(Cherub Rock). Get a versatile Fuzz pedal and tweak from there. It's a way more cheaper option and should absolutely work.

Tremoverb is what he's most known for.

If they're going to be super picky about getting a Tremoverb tone, you might just pick up a ToneX or similar to run into your PS100. Might take time to find the right profile, but shouldn't be impossible.

Though it seems a bit silly. Their tone varied from album to album and doesn't seem (to me) particularly important. Generic overdriven guitars will be more than fine as long as the singer has the goods, but they want what they want, I guess.

The guitar (guild polara or s100) with the low output pickups into a chorus pedal with the rate set high into a fuzzy/doom/dark sounding amp tone is going to be most of the tone. Early stuff was the Peavey VTM and the latter albums the mesa amps. My old rectoverb got scary close in raw mode with an OCD as a boost for solos. Low output pickups and an analog chorus pedal in front of a dark sounding amp is 95% of Kim's sound.

I’m willing to bet that new Laney Supergrace pedal/amp and a couple of pedals would work great for those tones. Maybe a small cab for the stage and running the IR’s out to FOH.

Or find a VTM60 for $600, build a new headshell out of pine so it’s pretty light and use a couple of pedals.

He used an Electrodyne for a while as well and those can be had for cheap right now.
Search YouTube. People may have done vids on recreating Soundgarden’s tone.
You want something that produces a deep growl but chimes out on the upper strings with volume roll off.
A JVM might work with the higher gain settings on the clean channel or lower gain sounds on CH2 with a pedal. Keep it a little woolier than what CH3 would do.
Have they said what they would like visually on stage as that may matter to them. Also would affect if you use amp/cabs or some of the smaller, more direct options mentioned.

He’s used electrodyne since 2010 . That’s what u use for Soundgarden still .

Thanks!! Lots of great input. Did Mesa do away with the "Multiwatt" Dual Rectos? I dont see them on Sweetwater site. They have 90's and Badlsnder only? Is the 90's Recto reissue worth the extra scratch versus the multiwatt?

Early Soundgarden (up to Louder Than Love a JCM800 or Peavey VTM, middle era a Tremoverb or 2 ch Dual Rec Solo head, Down on the Upside a Mesa Maverick or Tremoverb on the clean channel with the preamp gain up to where it breaks up a little at volume, King Animal an Electradyne.

Just watching back through this, it looks like the later years he was using a tremoverb on the blues setting mixed with the electradyne with a MXR/CAE boost. I really think a dark mid gain tone is all you really need. A good single rectifier, rect-o-verb, or an f50 or a lonestar, or any of those darker sounding amps is going to get you close.

Another cheaper, more recent option is the newer Laney GH series. These amps excel at this dark mid-gain grunt. My GH30r is dark and wooly and with a boost sounds kind of similar to what he was getting in that video.

Here is an edit from a recent show. The show that sent the dude in the white t shirt packing.. LOL.

Always wanted to try an Electrodyne. How's it compared to a Stiletto Deuce?

Tried them both in a local shop about 12-15 yrs back. I found them to both be more british sounding than most Mesa amps, but the Stiletto had magnitudes more gain and much more modern tonality. To put them in more Marshall terms, JTM45 vs modded JCM 800 vibe. Not that either sounded like those marshall amps, just talking about the magnitudes of difference in gain range. The stiletto was a little stiff from a feel perspective, but I remember thinking it sounded good with a BB preamp pushing it, but then again, the BB is my favorite boost for most Mesa amps.
