Seems like John Mayer is going to do it again...

I think John can play, it's just I can't stand his songwriting...his songs just never seem to get off the ground. He sounds a lot better playing with BB King or Buddy Guy, IMO.

who from Mayer's generation would you say does what he does better?
Derek Trucks is a much better guitarist, but doesn't do the sucky pop bs.

yeah but again, where's dereck trucks compared to Mayer?

that's why these forums are full of frustrated guitarist and musicians man. You all wanna go for the most skilled instead of getting to the people. I could care less if Green Day only plays 3 chord songs, they are doing something they like and they're getting it out there. At the end EVERY fucking musician would give a right arm to be playing every night in front of 15,000 people, and whoever says no, is a liar.

Not EVERY one would joey, I for one would not. For one I am perfectly happy playing at home with my friends or alone. Also I have a family to tend to which is why I gave up the band thing 10 years ago.
Plus the music that Mayer and Green Day(perfect example) play does not appeal to me one bit so why would I want to play music I hate for 15000 people? I would rather play music I love for 30.

sure I'll give you that, maybe you are indeed happy where you are, I won't generalize.

But 80% of the musicians would.

Everyone is naming players I like such as Kotzen, Bonamassa, and Trucks and I would agree that probably all of them are better players than Mayer. But its not apples to apples. These guys are not pop artists who dabble a little in bringing accessible blues and jazz to the masses. They are niche players.

I just think that the people that dont like Mayer have deluded themselves into thinking its because hes not a good player, when its really rooted in something else. Maybe its jealousy, maybe not. Maybe you dont like pop music or even his style of pop music, and thats FINE. But to say hes not a good player (at least better than avergae) is foolish when the guy can hold his own on a stage next to Clapton and Buddy Guy.

Stop with the Clapton comparisons already but I'm not a big fan of Clapton anyway. So he can hold his own with Clapton, well big deal! It's not like they're trying to outdo eachother and i find Clapton's playing pretty much a borefest for the past 20 years.

But Clapton has written some great songs over the years, classics actually, Layla. And i did like the Cream era of Claptons playing when he was considered a God for his time. I haven't heard 1 Mayor song that sounds like it will stand a test of time. To mention Mayor's songs with Cream is laughable to me.

Mayer is a good guitar player, but so are the guys playing Country covers on lower Broad for $100 a night here in Nashville. The only people who are deluded are the ones who think Mayer is a great guitarist. I'm sorry for you, but he is not. I wish he was, 'cause I'm a big fan of great guitar playing.

whoever said jack white can sing is seriously out of it. Shit, I'd rather listen to John Mayer - and I hate his music too

also, what headlessdeadguy said about playing music you like to a small crowd - absolutely agree.

I like how if I don't like someone, its cause I'm jealous. Prince has way more than Mayer, and I'm not jealous, because Prince rules.

if I had no right arm, I wouldn't be able to play anyway.

I wouldn't care to play to 15000 every night, cause I don't like going to see shows that are that big. way more fun to see shows where the crowd is smaller than that

I personally like John Mayer. Anybody who can walk around outside before their own concert in a bear costume, and talk shit about themselves, is ok in my book.
