Serious question about pedals

I think the important part of the question was “stripped down rock”. In that case. Maybe 4.

Something like tuner, overdrive, phase 90, delay.

Or tuner, fuzz, vibe, reverb.

Etc.

I want it to sound raw and I want a tube amp.

I'm late to the Pedal Party.. I committed to Digital and MIDI decades ago, but am willing to learn.
I have no Board, only 2 Pedals on the floor; an Analog Delay and a Univibe.
I still prefer Digital Delay on high gain leads, but rolled back and cleans tones are cool with Analog. I like that warm air thing it adds to the sound..

I'm waiting on a Chorus and will get a Tuner and that will make 4..

I feel with an analog and digital delay, verb, flange, was, tuner, and a boost anything is possible.. okay maybe add in an eq.

Did someone say mini boards?

Excessive for me is insufficient for others. Larry LaLonde has about 30 and the dude’s on it like a monkey on a cupcake.

If it sounds good and doesn’t detract from the show who cares.

Anyone can play the blues. It's the first shit anyone learns on guitar.
I haven't seen a single clip here of anyone playing the blues worth a shit. The bar to entry is low, the bar to mastery is high.

You grab your cigs, toss on your randy savage glasses, fringe leather jacket, climb aboard your iron horse and twist the throttle a few times, pull the choke, kick your bike over and head out to see your favorite stripped down rock n roll band.

How many pedals are on the guitar player's board before you think to yourself "this is some fluffy bullshit"?
Anything besides boost is unwelcome 😂

I hear you. I was having a little fun with that comment. Not aimed at you, btw. I enjoy the blues, over the years I've played Crossroads, Voodoo Chile(not blues lol), many ZZ tunes, etc.
Gotta put the notes in the right place, and the right timing.

Amen and glad to hear at least one guy gets it (and understands blues vs blues rock). Notes in the right place and timing. That's so difficult to achieve on a repeat basis. I just finished up the vocal tracking for an 8 song original record, that's been just as much or more of a challenge. Stuff has been driving me nuts and I still have one guitar track to clean up. 20 years of trying to kill remnants of a nasal vocal tone...my kid has a soundcraft series 5 console and the shadow hill mastering compressor program, it def helped. So did the rasp leftover from last nights gig, lol.

Serious answer though is it isn't the number of pedals but WHICH pedals that makes it ridiculous

For example if someone has a tuner, wah, and noise gate as a part of 6 pedals? Not that bad

If their 6 pedals are 3 overdrives, 2 strymons, and a digitech drop? Yeah thats overboard

Q: How many pedals do you have on your board?

A: Yes!

Does that make sense though? There's a difference between auxiliary type effects that you use to make the performance its best, and pedals that you're throwing on your board just to have more bullshit to carry around and show off - know what i mean?

So for example i have like a 5 pedal gig board for my punk band, but half of it is "Auxiliary" shit like that, and the other half is constantly being used

You would not believe the boards I see sometimes - especially with like the young zoomer offset kids bands

Shit like THIS

Then during the gig, the literal only things they ever step on is the preamp, and then the fuzz for one solo

Yeah it does. And then there is the guy that thinks stacking three high quality OD's for that solo makes things sound even better. Meanwhile his tone is something you'd drive a lifted 4x4 with super swampers on it through. Mud hole.

The crazy part is that dude with that huge board could literally do ALL OF THOSE PEDALS (except for maybe the ricochet) in the one HX Stomp he has.

It's fucking ridiculous.

Pedals are really useful for making your band sound good live, but they have to be used judiciously - they're like cymbals on a drum set. Do you need 12? No, and you can get by with 1-2, but if you use 6 carefully you can make things sound better.
