I currently have a Jazz in the neck and Suhr Aldrich in the bridge of my '73 LP custom. I have push pull tone pots so both can be split, though I rarely run the Jazz split. I am pretty happy with the Jazz in the neck. My buddy is changing out the pickups in his LP studio light ('57 classic and '57 classic+) and has a SD '59 4 cable neck pickup in there currently.

Is it worth trying out the '59 in my LP custom? Which pickup do you prefer between the '59 and Jazz?

I am not looking for other pickup recommendations, just looking for opinions on these two. My LP custom is a dark and mean sounding guitar. It darker, thicker, and meaner sounding than my '03 LP standard LE.

My personal preference is the Jazz but they're both great neck pickups. Because you say your Custom is a dark sounding guitar (odd for a Custom in my experience), the Jazz is probably an even better fit as its a bit brighter than a '59.

+1, Rupe is dead on with this.

And it worked pretty well for Randy, too.

Love the 59 in the neck position. Solos are just huge on a 59n.

My LP standard LE that I am comparing it to also has an ebony board, so I am sure that shapes my thoughts on the LP custom. Only ever owned 2 LP studios before, so I don't have a lot of LP's to compare these too. They all have sounded different though.

Thanks for the comments on the pickups.

The '59 is winning in the poll, but there are not many overall votes. For those that are voting for the '59 what do you like about it and/or why do you prefer it to the Jazz?

I just put a spazz in the neck and a JB in the bridge of my 1960 Les Paul...

I could not be happier with the guitar.

IMO the Jazz just kicks ass in a LP

I have the Aldrich/59 combo, works beautifully - The 59 can get the full Sykes tone for soloing, and split is a great clean tone.

The Jazz technically has more upper treble (i.e. presence), but the 59 has more push behind it. Which, to my ears, makes it cut better.
