Seymour Duncan distortion and Motor City Detroiter?

So I have a Edwards E-lp-LTC98 with a MCP Detroiter in it. The guitar sounds awesome and I really like that pickup. I got a new Les Paul and decided to try out a Seymour Duncan Distortion after hearing a friend of mines (similar) guitar with the same type of pickup. After installing the Seymour Duncan Distortion I noticed that my Detroiter seems to be a much hotter sounding pickup, and I am having to turn my gain up on my JCM 800 when using the Les Paul with the Distortion? Does this seem strange to anyone else? I would have thought that the Distortion would have much gain than the Detroiter. The Distortion sound good and very full but I was just a little confused by this? Any thoughts?

Don't know anything about the Detroiter but a Distortion is allegedly a JB with a ceramic magnet instead of the A5 that's in a JB. Kind of medium-hot but not full blown jabanero.

Maybe play around with the height of the Distortion.

Sometimes, with the ceramic mag, they are a little bit finicky in certain guitars. I have never had one that had less output than a Detroiter......usually they are a little over the top.

Have you gone back and checked your wiring, traced your solder joints, etc

I LOVE Wades pickups, and he is my favorite source for pickups over Duncan. However, the Distortion should be causing you to back off on the gain, rather than increasing it.

The Les Paul might have a 300k volume pot which would do this as the Edwards are 500k.

Just a thought... the detroiter has quite a bit more clarity and mids than the SD as well so I wonder if that is making it sound hotter? IIRC the detroiter is a 12K wind whereas the SD is 16.6K and so DC resistance is not a reliable measurement.

I've had both in the same guitar as well and noticed the same thing a few years ago.

Thanks for the replies guys! Yeah I was wondering if it could have been the 300k vs the 500k thing. I just got in some new pots and caps, I believe that I will switch them out and see what that does for it. It could also be the difference in clarity driving the amp harder (or at least being perceived to drive the amp harder) which brings me new a new question, have any of you guys tried the Nasty Nasty? Im a big fan of the detroiter but I just wanted a pickup that was a little hotter. Anyways thanks!
