Man..what a talent this guy was / is...circa 87'/88'

I only have powers of ten, and I only really like about half of it, BUT>...............

He's the best player who has ever lived.

There, I said it.

I just saw this video posted on the JCF...I'll say here what I said there.

He was a great player, no doubt. This wasn't one of his better moments though IMO. Yeah, he tore it up, but at the expense of the song. You can play for the song, or you can play to the song...this was a case of the latter. I'll take Jeff Beck's version any day.

so much harmony/melody/technique/soul and musical brilliance just seaps out of Shawn...a true musical genius.

Yeah, I'm a huge Shawn Lane fan too, however, I agree with you on this one.

As a side note, the new Jeff Beck DVD is absolutely killer. His version of the Beatles tune "A Day In The Life" is amazing!

The DVD has a lot of cool stuff on it but "Day in the Life" is just mesmerizing. The quality of the DVD is excellent...much better than any of the bootleg stuff that's out there. There are a few interviews on the DVD that are pretty cool too. You'll also get a few glimpses of Jimmy Page in the audience as well as Robert Plant hiding in the shadows. Oh yeah, there are couple of guest artist that come up and play too.

By the way, Jeff Beck will be 65 on the 24th of this month!

I didn't like it much. Lane is great as usual but the vibe isn't right. Also the singer... bleh.

There was a singer ???

Check out some of his other playing on UTube. We lost one of the best the day he died!!

This is some of the best playing I've ever heard.

Lane is great but Beck's a legend and you gotta love that knee to the back of the guitar at the end. :D

I have most, if not all, of Lane's cd's plus a shit-ton of bootlegs. My favorite playing of his is with The Willies.

this is my favorite concert of his on youtube because i was there that night:

his tone with that valley arts strat is :codeak:

looks like the luke model???

it was such GREAT tone in that celestion tent that night..except bunny brunnel was WAAAAYYYYY too loud on bass.

Very cool video. I remember when I first heard him on the Powers of Ten CD. Yep, truly one of the best that ever was.

Thanks for posting this. I just spent the past hour watching Shawn Lane stuff on YouTube.

I must admit that, although I heard his name and I knew he died, I never really heard any of his stuff before.
From what little I read about him through the years I guess I classified him as a Paul Gilbert super shreddy guy.

What I saw on the videos was phenomenal.

Weird set of emotions to being inspired and awed and then saddened knowing I never got to see him play live.

The guy obviously could shred, but I really enjoyed his slower playing (from what I saw). Great phrasing & vibrato.

you can hear his holdsworth and ej influences here and there, but for the most part he was very unique

so fast and clean and so far no recording i've heard of his has captured just how great his tone was. it was killer that night.
