Show and Tell: PEC pots in my 2005 G0/R0 w/new pups!

I've had these pots for over a year, and decided to put them into my 2005 G0/R0 last night. Soldering to stainless-steel is way too difficult, so I soldered the grounds directly to the output ground. I've never liked soldering to the back of pots anyway, so it worked out perfectly. The new pups are Wolfetone "Marshallhead" Alnico II's, which are the best Wolfe's I've tried yet. The PEC pots are $25.00 per pot, but are IMO definitely worth the upgrade.

Thanks! The soldering on the braided leads is temporary, until I decide if I'm going to stick with the Marshallhead A2 in the bridge. Once I decide, I will shorten the leads for a more tidy appearance. I have a Dr. Vintage bridge that I want to try also. This kit is SO quiet. I don't know if it's the PEC pots, or foregoing the normal soldering to the rear of the pots? It was so quiet, that I didn't think I had the guitar plugged-in at first. I'm going to try the same think on my Flying V.

I researched this, and apparently it is referred to as a Teaburst. I don't know for sure though? I was told that the G0's were done in Darkburst and Teaburst, so I assume that's what it is.

I love the darkburst model also. I had a 2010 R0 Bourbon, but the red dye on the back didn't look right, the nitro had a weird smell to it, weighed nearly 10 lbs, and the neck was WAY too thin - yet I loved that guitar! I don't know if the GC models all have the same neck, but this one was crafted perfect for my playing style.

They use some weird plasticizers in their process now. And typically, the 'Nitro' is just a sealer coat before gobs of Polyurethane are piled on.

Then again, I'm not there in the factory and these are completely unsubstantiated claims.

The guys at RS Guitarworks told me the same thing. I was going to mention it, but didn't want to start a Gibson finish fart-storm...

Well this isn't TGP. I used Nitro on my refinish but it's because it was readily available and I dig the cracking. I like Polyurethane too and I've heard NO tonal difference at all as I refinished the guitar with Poly then Nitro a second time. I also strung it up with no finish and there was no difference.

It shouldn't gas off that badly. My Nitro (straight Nitro) stopped stinking after a week. I let it sit for a month before I wet sanded (come at me purists).

I love the smell of pure nitro, but whatever the formula Gibson is now using... I also had a 2008 Goldtop that I sold for the same reason.

I use to work at a music store back in the 80's. Whenever a new Gibson would arrive, we would all huddle around the case to cop a whiff of fresh nitro gas!
