I am looking for an 80s style axe with a Floyd. I know the Japanese RG550 is decent. How do you think It compares to the Mexi Charvel SoCal?

The RG's are great. If they didn't come with generic pickups and basswood bodies I'd like them a lot more. Personally for 80's, (that's when I was a young man) I'd snag a 24 fret Charvel with a Floyd. They usually come with DiMarzios, Duncans, EMG's or Fishman pickups.

I hate shipping anything but I might have something you might be interested in this weekend. However I did find a great deal on the anniversary model in yellow with the shark teeth inlays… let me know and I will give you the info.

I'm not a fan of buying before playing either, try them both if possible. I've really enjoyed the RG550s and MIM SoCals that I've played, they're pretty different from one another

I still own some RG from the late 80s early 90s and had tried out a few times the new Genesis series, I think Ibanez did great with the new series.

However, I also own 2 MiM Wolfgang Special and recently a coworker asked me to set up his MiM Charvel Jim Root (quite similar to the one in your photo above) and I really liked it too.

I'd say, go with the one that you like the most and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Since they are not a PRS, you should go totally off the reservation ...

BC Rich Warlock....

Just do it....

But if not.... Ibanez

If I'm spending the same amount of money on each, I'm likely going for the RG, and that's coming from a Charvel guy. My MIJ Socal has been the only guitar to stay with me since 2011. (I do have another home brew that I put together in 2012 that has also stood the test of time, but a lot of others have come and gone)

It’s been a while since I’ve played either, but aren’t a wizard and a Charvel neck radically different?

I love to play both kinds of music, Rhythm and Blues and I love both brands of guitars, JAMES TYLER and PRS.
