Shrill Les Paul with WLH & BB3 in Bridge: Losing Hope...

Put an EQ in the loop, and cut the highs. Problem solved.

I had a BB3 pickup, it was too bright in my LP, too. I had an early one (12-13 years ago), no wax potting. I had it wax potted, then it was too dull for me. I have given up on all Gibson pickups except old P90's and PAF pickups...and even 1/2 of those are hit and miss.

I'd try a Suhr Aldrich in the bridge and a Dimarzio PAF 59 bridge pickup in the neck but that might be too high output for you. But that would def be a much warmer combo than what you have.

Update: I played the Friedman BE100 today at GC with my Paul and i could hear a difference. I'll write more later, it was a great amp!!! Very articulate. I can tell it may partly be my amp AND I also was experimenting at home with my Marshall by turning the tone know down and that DID help. ...I think I'm finding, however, that I'm just not crazy about the Duncan WLH in the bridge.

So, I'm not gonna sell the Paul. I am going to try a different bridge humbucker and I'm also going to put the Duncan Slash in the Neck. I LOVE that tone. I don't like the 'jangly' and 'almost honky' vibe of the WLH. It sounds GREAT for Page tones, but I'm looking for somethign different. I don't need a high gain pickup as my amps have plenty of gain.

I'm looking for something medium output, great clarity under hard rock to early metal, and not super bright as my Paul is already bright and middy. Not something too expensive either, hence why I like Duncans.

Maybe Slash bridge too?? I haven't played one, but it should match well with the neck!!!

Slash APH-2 set will work if you want straight forward classic rock. If you like deep with some "sizzle" in your bridge go Pearly Gates. Regardless yes dump the BB3 for sure I have always hated that pickup too grainy and annoying. Never played a WLH, but some say it is a one trick pony.

You can also phone up Arcane or Seymour Duncan HQ - seriously - just call them; explain what's happening, and let them wind a set for you - the pricing is only a bit more than off the shelf (at least in the case of SD) and they're custom made JUST for you

Long overdue follow-up to this. I put a Duncan Custom-8 in the bridge and that solved the issue. I love this pickup so much, I have it in 3 other guitars.

I have Trad Pro with the BB3. I am OK with it. I think anyway! Thought about going down the pickup rabbit hole but I end never seeing the light of day again when I do that.

Plus I lack the skills and tools to do the work!
