I don't think PF kicked Barrett out as much as his erratic behavior and changing personality forced the issue. He's certifiably insane, a tragic genius, and has spent most of his life in care.

Sounds horrible to say, but in a way it's a good thing that Syd left/got kicked out. Roger Waters might not have taken musical direction of the band and they might not have put out some of the absolutely classic albums that they eventually did.

On a related note, David Gilmour still has it. Remember That Night: David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall is amazing.
