I don't know. I really enjoyed that! While I am a bigger Metallica fan I am also a huge Black Sabbath fan as well. To me it seemed like Kirk added his style to the song, there isn't anything wrong with that in my opinion.
To a degree, Hoff - I agree with you. Your reply seems very reasonable.

Still though, I just think he's so very lackluster when it comes to his guitar playing.

Sounds good to me?
That's because you're in Australia and the indigenous Aborigines are a close second to hamlet. :)

Thanks for the post. Im not a big fan of any of these bands. I dont hate them either. Just kinda neutral.

I'm with the others on this one. Kirks playing is pretty good actually! I admire guitarists that spin a cover into their own instead of just duplicating it. He did just enough to honor the original but not get too crazy.

Panteras version was my least favorite, in all facets. The guitar playing didnt do too much for me. The vocals are just....

This so wrong. It's a live gig. If you felt good and the crowd felt good it was a good gig, and whoever stands at the end of the venue making sarcastic comments can #&@ˇ~^.
If it would not be the Youtube era, everyone attended would talk about the magical experience hearing Metallica doing Sabbath tunes. I bet most of the famed Zep, Beatles, Stones shows were far from perfect.
I'm not a fan of Kirk, but this was not embarrassingly bad, he did what he could in the moment and that's it.
Get real, get your guitar and play. Peace.

I'm a huge Sabbath fan and I don't care to listen to anyone but Sabbath doing their material unless Randy Rhoads counts on the Tribute album or Brad Gillis on the Speak of the Devil album ;

This thread makes me feel like cranking some zeppelin and laughing at the OP. :D

I will never understand that kind of bashing. This thread is a waste of good energy. Come on guys, talk about gear and shit.

Yet another thread poster does not understand the difference between opinion and fact.

Here is an example, my opinion is that Kirk Hammett sucks ass. Can't write for shit, and surfs instead of rocking. There see how easy?

HAmsters leads in hole in the sky are brutal and he's flat. Further more, there is a section where he is guessing the key and guessing wrong. Just brutal. Good old pentatonic Kirk. Actually the whole band sounds like a mess there.

What a douche this hamlet guy is - check this comp. I'm a full hard core "Original Sabbath" worshiper. I don't think that hamlet is capable of learning anything of any complexity on guitar ANYTHING! Thr punk completely botches one of my favorite BS hard core tunes.

You really need to find something more constructive and positive to do with your time. If you don't like a particular guitarist, don't listen to him/her. Posting a thread online about how much they suck is immature and pointless. It makes you seem like a small person who worries about things that don't matter.

...damn that was bad

Its pretty well known he is an avid surfer and admits to going weeks without touching guitar. It shows in his playing and his technique - things like that never really develop if you dont do the time.

FWIW Pantera's cover is just fucking sick

Here, here!! I can relate to this 100%

Great taste in music there KC...

While drowning at the jerk spammet suckage pool…... it always amazes me that kerry and jeff got as far as they did in slayer and never progressed AT ALL as lead players.

It's as though they said "hey who cares about craft, talent, progression, playing in key, cleanly picking and articulating notes" etc?

Imagine how much better slayer could be if those guys actually practiced a LITTLE bit,and played in key without all that random hack slop spewage.

I don't buy into the argument that "it fits the music".
imho the solos in 99% of slayers catalogue are horrendous .

I think Kirk actually did sound pretty decent on this. His solo seemed to be meant to not go overboard, just keep it very simple in order to pay respect.
