This is the first time I have ever recorded a single coil strat and gone for a rockin' tone. This is my Warmoth, alder bodied strat with Duncan SSL-1 pickups (very wimpy and vintage output) and Callaham vintage trem. FRom there it's into a DOD YJM308 pedal and into a Splawn Quick Rod on Gear 1 OD2 with the gain set at about 11:00.

I pulled out this guitar today because I was thinking of throwing DiMarzio HS-3's in it but wanted to see what it sounded like as is. Besides the strings being ancient and rusty and the pickup selector switch being full of dust and cutting out here and there, I had some fun. I was pretty surprised at what it sounded like, but my wife walked by and said "that tone is wimpier than normal". Well, what does she know from singe coil strats?

I don't think I'm going to switch to DiMarzio pickups now though I'd like a little more highs and "pick click" on the neck pickup. What do you guys think?

Oh yeah, warts and all, missed notes, ringing open strings. Sue me. :D

Edit: I got brave enough to post the even cleaner 1st Gear OD1 clip I recorded. I think I may like this one eveb better tone wise.

Pretty much sounds awesome man. A really brown sound IMO. No reason to change it assuming you probably have plenty of guitars with humbuckers.

Sounds killer man! Dig the tone and playing.

Thanks bro. This was one of those pleasant surprises with a guitar and a pedal that I have totally ignored.

single coils do have a thing about them that really makes them raw on the dirty tones.

great playing and cool tones---but it needs more liquid gain to release the fingers yeah?

yeah, thanks for buying it. Great playing man!

see man you've been holding out, you know u like that sexy spanky single coil snap over HB's but just won't admit it.  im messing with ya..although i do hear your expressiveness come out more. and that didn't sound wimpy by the way! smokin playing, tone and vibes bro. the hs-3's are even more less output than the ssl-1's, i wouldn't change a thing, that guitar sounds cool.

Nice tone and playing.

That pedal really loosens up the stiff Quickrod tone, sounds more bouncy/juicy. :)

Sounds terrific on these little laptop speakers... :)
How does the YJM compare to something like an OD808? I usually boost my QR with the OD808. I can't seem to get comfortable with OD2 for anything. It's like everything gets exaggerated when OD2 is engaged... Highs, lows, mids, gain. OD1 is great across all gears!

I think I just need to play more to release the fingers. The liquid gain thing is not something I'm into right now.

Thanks Ant. The HS-3 are lower output than the SSL-1's? That's weird because the SSL-1 is described as a true vintage single coil and on Duncans tone chart it is their wimpiest Alnico 5 based single coil. I didn't know the HS-3 was lower output than a vintage single coil. I've never played one though but always thought it was gonna be a touch hotter. I do think I'm going to leave the guitar as is.

The stiffness of the Quick Rod can really be manipulated in the EQ section of the amp. My EQ knobs look bizarre the way they are set if you are used to Marshalls. My Quick Rod is really spongy sounding and not very tight the way I have it set.

The YJM is more transparent than the OD808. They are both cool. The 808 adds it's own vibe with humbuckers that I really like but the YJM doesn't seem to have it's own characteristic sound like a TS and an SD-1 do. Next I am going to try the YJM with humbuckers.

I'll have to listen later....no speakers here at work. Alder wood :gethim:
