Shit that's all the gain I'd ever need!

Well, you are obviously more manly than me. Well, let me rephrase that. You are more manly than most men who have ever done time in a Madonna tribute band and enjoyed it.

Thanks RVS
:aww:

You have a long memory..that was a long time ago!

Didn't you post a picture of yourself with some dancers or backup singers from that gig?

Yeah he did..................SMOKING!

I remember that too... :D
mmmmm...I remember. ;)

Lost those pics to a hard drive crash...did anyone save any of them? :D

Someone did.. .but they may be all defiled... LOL! :D

These were some of my favorite toned clips I've heard .. Perfecto... . p.s.. my 1st guitar I've had now for 34 years is a 1966 Strat made of ALDER. . . . When I worked at a guitar company in the mid 80's, they made guitars out of every wood you can imagine and Alder was my favorite for the strat-style bodies. Can't beat that tone to me... . Thanks for the clips and your tone and playing kick ass

ERIC

Eric,
Thanks man! I have a '66 strat too. I am going to have to pull it out of the case and fire it up. I have just NEVER been a strat guy. But I am having such a single coil jones right now I am walking around my house trying to see if I can get a single coil into my Alhambra classical or my Les Paul or maybe my toaster or blender. I am in love with that clarity. Gotta work on the chops a little because these pickups are not exactly friendly to almost pulling something off, you know?

Have any pics of your '66? Here's mine:

Yes, I do. But I saw you on stage with a few hot chick dancers and though you were trying to look cool and act all nonchalant standing behind those wiggling women I know you were thinking, "Man this is the greatest gig EVAR!"

You may have been right, which is why we all remember those pics!

Missed these the first time through... Glad I saw the thread this time. Both clips sound really good to me! The playing just rips, man...

You gotta come down and do one of these free-form jam things that Bob and I have been doing and that he has been recording and videoing. Would be cool to see what you come up with! Only rules - 1) No recognizable songs 2) No working things out with the rhythm section. Just strap in, play and see where it goes... Fun...

Steve

I'm not sure if you or Bob remember because, let's just say both your blood alcohol was probably .93 but you guys did invite me to one of these free form jams. Of course you guys didn't give me a date or an address which kind of reminded me of a few girls in high schools way of blowing me off.

Man my Splawn Competition didn't sound like that???

I bet it did!

I bet it did too. These amps need a little massaging on the way you set up the EQ. It's actually weird to look at the knobs pointing like that. When I finished these clips the other night I unplugged the strat and plugged in my Charvel So Cal with the Mojave PAF and without touching a knob, or using the boost I was loving the brown tones I was getting.

Yup... :D
Especially the treble and presence control. That's where the character of the amp is.

All I know is It was bright and loud. I took it to Mike's aka ratter to play it at louder volumes. Even with the Pres and Treble set low it was ear piercing. Mike had a 1959HW at the time that I prefered to it. But most of the Splawn clips I've heard have been great. Dunno. Never checked the bias.

Exactly! And I'm not sure if they actually adjust the Presence and Treble or if they just change the overall gain structure and tightness/looseness of the amp. I mean, the EQ'ing of the amp does seem a bit weird to me but I switch back and forth between my Super Leads and my JCM800 and well, I will stick with the Splawn, even with the knobs pointing to different parts of the clock than I am used to with a Marshall.

That's my 1st guitar... got it with a Gretsch amp and case for 200.00 .. . Prices are a bit different these days on a mid 60's strat huh... . I play mostly guitars with Bridge HB's and s/c's in the other positions , but wood-wise and tonewise this one is great and it was my #1 for MANY years through a PV Classic 2x12 and then a 1971 Superlead!

I noticed the same thing! The amp is always bright, angry and percussive. Here's something weird I noticed. Running the treble off sounds very different to me than running the treble ALMOST off. It's like when the treble is engaged, even so slightly, the tone changes. Same thing with the presence. Another thing I found is that I generally don't like OD2. I really don't like it at higher gain settings! I much prefer OD1 + pedal than OD2. However if I roll the gain down on OD2 it sounds better to me. I usually stick with OD1 and a pedal.

Mine is warmer than any of my Marshalls. ratter had a Plexi reissue but I have a '70 Super Trem, a '72 Super Lead, an '83 JCM800 and the Mojave Peacemaker and the Splawn is the warmest of all of them. It can be very bright too if you want that. I dial that away and I am thrilled with what I am getting. YMMV

You wanna laugh? All of the clips I've recorded with the QR had the volume OFF! I like how it sounds! Volume off and the Solo Boost past 10:00. I think you may have been dialing in that amp with your eyes...

I listened to your clips Curt. Nice playing. All kidding aside, alder sounds decent with sc's, the extra low mid gives the sc's some fatness.

Swamp ash still sounds better to me. Must be all that humidity I am used to....

I think you like the tonal qualities of swamp ash because it emits the same frequency that the mosquitos do as they endlessly circle your ears, mad that your long hair blocks a favorite biting point. Don't worry, they will find a different place to bite as does swamp ash. It bites at a higher frequency than I like. Then again, I'm sun-baked dude. What do I know?

Nice! Although I have to say, whoever was spraying the sunbursts in '66 could have used some lessons from the guys who came before him and after him. Still they are cool. Mine belonged to a movie producer out here in Hollywood. He was the guy who made the movie with Dennis Rodman and Jean Claude Van Damme. For some reason he needed money after that cinematic debacle..... I don't know why, maybe so he could EAT! My buddy had a bunch of guitars of his on consignment in his store so I grabbed this one because it played so well and sounded killer. Now my buddy never paid the movie producer for this and several of his other guitars, but I have a RECEIPT for this guitar and well, the rest is for the bankruptcy courts to decide right? ;)
