I just joined a band that plays a lot of modern rock. Can the SL cover the heavier type of modern rock tones? If not what module?

Hey man,

I just played through a SL tonight. Between that and the VX, it's pretty much a dessert island feeling I have at the moment. With that said, the 3/4(x or stock) might be better suited.

However, maybe a Wampler plextortion or pinnacle in front of the DLX or VX could cover it?

I tried the Super Plextortion and it sounded good but like a pedal. Not as much impact and depth as coming from a amp.

I wonder if the Brown Eye mod with the saturation switch would give me what I'm looking for? I'm getting enough gain from the SL for heavier rhythm with the channel B cranked. I just need a little tighter and punchier tone. OTOH the SL is awesome at what it does. Maybe a boost or OD might get me what I'm looking for. I already have a BB Preamp and a BK Tube Driver which work better for leads.

I use a Barber LTD to punch up Channel A to get me onto heavier territory. It's not super high gain or anything, but it does stay nice and tight.

I have a treble booster lying around that a friend gave me. I tried it in the mid setting through channel A and got very close. It gives the SL a more tighter and aggressive tone. It even makes my Strat and Tele sound aggressive and pissed off. It may actually work for me.

IMO, the gain maxed on the SL B channel = modern enough to play Amon Amarth.

Throw in an OD pedal for soloing.

done.

I run an SL and an SL2 in my M4 for my main rhythm tones (also have Twin and BMan currently loaded and an MHG collecting dust on the sidelines). Channel B on the SL2 will get you where you need to be and will still provide you with that Marshall flavour.....

I've never tried the SL2X.....

Jeff's new Scorch module might be even more what you want - we're all waiting to see if he gets it into a dually.....

Thanks for the input guys

The treble booster changes the voicing of that eq and makes it sound awesome on both Ch A and B. The BB Preamp and Tube Driver also sound great through the SL.

I want to show up to the gig with my Tele and see how many people give me the "that's a freaking Tele it can't rock look". There's something about the mid setting of the treble booster that sounds so heavy.

Most of it is hated on here but this is a money gig

Nickelback, Theory Of A Deadman, Velvet Revolver, Shinedown, Foo Fighters, VH, Wezzer, Linkin Park ect.

The tone on Bad Girlfriend for example is more modern and tighter in the bass than what I've been able to get from the SL.

SL2X (upper mid bite) or EG3/4 (darker tones). Those will get your gain where it needs to be.

EG5 for brighter SLO type tones.

This for sure. I can do Tool, Muse, APC style tones with the mids way up, and Theory of a deadman, shinedown stuff with the mids down.

I talked with Dave Friedman on the phone today and decided to try a Brown Eye with the saturation switch. When I get a break in the action I'll be sending my SL off to be modded. It's going to take him 4 weeks  Anyone want to trade a Brown Eye for a stock SL?

Honestly man...I'd get a single channel Randall XTC module and have it modded to Jeff Hilligan's specs. That's the best Marshall modern tone I've played to date. That and a BB Preamp...is awesome.

Hey:

Can you give me your take on the Scorch? What amp(s) does it sound most like? How's the eq curve? Gain characteristics? Sustain?

I take it you are using it as your lead tone? Do you use it for rhythms too?

Thanks man!

The Scorch is like taking a Marshall JCM 800 hot-rodded and marrying it w/ a Mesa Mark IV. It has a LOT of gain, but it is VERY usable throughout. I use it as a heavy rhythm tone mainly. It has great sustain. It's not as smooth on the top end as some...as the treble part of the EQ is a bit higher to really add more bite to it. I personally love the Scorch for my modern rock heavy tones FOR SURE. The mids on it can go from extremely scooped to very present. Definitely a VERY broad spectrum of tones can be achieved w/ the Scorch. It definitely has modern rock written all over it for sure.

I use the XTC for my lead tone. It has this great vocal property to it that I just plain love. It's my favorite tone I have in my whole arsenal for sure. It's super and punchy on the low end, but warm through the mids, and a good bite on the top end. I just can't say enough good things about it. I use it both for more hard rock / hot-rodded marshally rhythm tones as well as my lead tone for sure.

Thanks for the descriptions! I have heard your rig on that video you posted around a month ago and it does sound killer. I am not really into metal, but like a real overdriven and singing lead tone. After hearing the clip of the Scorch that Jeff posted on here a few weeks back, I thought it might fit the bill. I am hoping he can get it into a dual module, though......

I'm realy not a metal player either. It has just a great modern rock tone. Honestly, I don't have a big need for dual channel modules outside of the COD / VX...since the BB preamp on top of a module gets me pretty well exactly what I would want w/ a dual channel module.

I have 2 singles (XTC and Scorch) and 2 duals (COD and VX) and I personally think a BB Preamp w/ a single channel feels pretty well like a dual channel honestly. Secondly (minus the VX and COD I have), i felt the dual channels never did great across both channels..and always used one channel typically of a module anyways.
