Well it finally came in so off I went to try it out at pianos and stuff. The amp has more than enough gain and was surprisingly tight and I did like the feel of it,but It seemed harsh on the ears. I was finding myself trying to lose some of the top end. I tried it through many cabs and the mesa recto sounded best for me. I am noway cutting on this amp it is a nice amp just not for me.

I am looking for a jmp and a early 80's jcm 800. And just maybe a jvm 210.

I had found 2 jmps but after I had paid for them the stores told me about some problems so I canceled them. Then we had an emergency yesterday but all is ok worked out.

Greg my VM is currently getting modded. Should add a little more gain. Ratter had one of those 1959HW Plexi reissues and when cranked it sounded phenominal. You know I'm a huge fan of the VM. Whatever you end up with I hope it does it for you.

If you listen to Slash's tone on the AFD album, tight and bright is the way I would describe it. Sounds like they may have nailed that. Again, may not be for you but I've always thought Slash's tone was bright and "wirey" sounding if that makes sense. It's the kind of thing that probably doesn't sound too good on its own but sits well with the band. May have a lot to do with his reckless abandon pick attack as well.

The amp would set in a live setting very well.

I think that is the key to Slash' sound. Isolated it sounds like a wall of angry wasps, but in a live/studio setting it covers the exact frequencies you need to stand out without clouding everything else.

I tried EL34's in it too but it sounded better to me with the stock Winged C 6550's. I also ran a JVM with it using the AFD's power amp and the JVM preamp and I was really digging it. By using the fx button on the AFD footswitch I could toggle between AFD and JVM preamp sections. Pretty cool.

NOS EL34 Siemens in mine. That is pretty cool, I never tried that, did you use the return level control on the AFD as an overall volume then?

I tried winged C and tung sol EL34's but I liked the 6550's the best. Didn't get a chance to try any NOS EL34's.

I just used the master and power control on the AFD to set the overall volume and left my channel volumes alone on the JVM since I had all of them balanced. I got the idea from some guy on the Marshall forum wondering what it would sound like. I was kind of shocked at how good it sounded. I haven't had much luck in the past doing that sort of thing.
