Ive said this before on the forum, around 2018 I almost completely gave up on Gibson. I was done and im a diehard. Any store I'd play a Les Paul, it would sound hollow, go out of tune constantly, buzz, cut out, etc. Was like they gave up caring and it pissed me off.

Once that management change happened, they regained their footing. I went to Sweetwater and saw some of the new guitars and they were awesome. Felt like they had weight to them again and were solid. I ordered a 2019 Standard and got it right off the factory line. Smelled like a bottle of good bourbon. That guitar rocks and I've played others and they are just solid. My ebony 2024 Studio is a great guitar as well. Wish it didnt have the R2D2 computer chip pickups but I dig the tones now on that.

The late 10s were a bad time for gibson for sure. I ordered a supreme from MF that I had to exchange twice

God help me, I'm always going to be a Strat guy. I can't change that. But if you don't have some form of a Les Paul in your collection, you need one.

I have too many. Especially for a Strat guy.

There was a black std from around 2010-12 on Austin CL for a grand about two years ago. Every tuner was cockeyed, I'm talking diagonal, on one side of the headstock. It had to be a pissed off employee. The paint was also lifting everywhere behind the knobs all the way to the stap button edge area. Gibson were well known in Nashville as a shit employer but starting wage when I stayed there in '06 was about 15 bucks an hour, a decent job for that area at the time. I considered applying until locals gave me the inside scoop that it really wasn't worth it.

Whatever the case, gibson has really upped their game the last half decade or so, and they deserve some credit - because it got really bad there for a hot minute.

I have a feeling that this covid era of gibson is going to be like the "good wood" era of guitars, where they are a little more sought after because the QC is so noticeably higher.

Yes sitting down with them can be a pain sometimes I agree and for the back in general too standing or sitting......


But I still love em

I've never had much of an issue with the weight...wide straps generally takes care of that, but the sitting is annoying (and entirely my own poor technique lol) .. the fat ass of them makes the neck lean down so compensating for that tends to kink my back. I should really just sit it on my left leg like I do with my V's when sitting, but it then feels like it wants to slip to the right because of the little lower horn hahaha

I agree and you are probably right about that if quality slips down the line. The robot tuner era, oof. I'm sure there are some hidden gems but unless you put hands on it that's a big gamble. I've always liked the Memphis stuff. That was such a cool factory...right off Beale...toured it with my ol' lady in '01. There are quite a few nice Memphis guitars and is the reason for for $350-450 faded series V's and stuff. I was looking around at the current Memphis blues scene just recently. Man, things have changed there and not really for the better.

my first guitar at age 12 (cheap copy) and probably my last.
once I found how I like them (light, A5 PUs, 57 or 60 neck carve) they’ve become my fav after 25yrs of playing super strats. I’m about to take a break and revisit the PRS CU24 but as soon as one per above spec comes up for sale at reasonable price i’ll grab it

I agree. When I pick up a Les Paul in a store now, there is a consistency that was lacking for awhile. It just seems like more care is put into things.

Thankfully as well, the names mean something again. If I hear "Standard" or "Classic" I know what im going to get. They had too many versions which probably jacked things up as well.

In 1987 I wanted to be Ace Frehley…lol. Was also a Tom Kiefer fan. And the came Slash. My first electric was a 1974 wine red Les Paul Custom that I picked up for $450. At the time, a new Les Paul Standard was $800.

I flirt with Strat shaped objects all the time, but a Les Paul is home for me.

I’ve had several of them over the years. I finally found one that I love about a month ago and I’ll keep this one permanently. I’ve used it on 3 shows already and you just know the feeling when you have a guitar that becomes part of you when you are playing. The build quality is outstanding. Nothing like that feeling!

Also I think Slashs first LP was a Les Paul Copy from Chris Derigg..... that said Gibson on the headstock.

Not even a real Gibsons but compared to the crap Gibson was making at the time it was the best Les Paul one could have back in the 80s regading current production at the time back then and what was available. Goes to show build and quality matter vs the name on the headstock but yeah......

He still has it of course but it is and has been long retired and he plays actual Gibsons since they brought their game up from at least the 90s I believe and on aside from vintage Gibsons too but he mainly takes the current production Gibsons on the road vs the vintage stuff even. Gibson is that good now.

Honestly IMO Gibsons really turned it around.


Especially now that they are pretty much snubbing Murphy Lab in favor of gloss finishes. Murphy Lab is so lame too, it cost more and they always have issues. Now they have really turned the company around IMO.

I've had a few of them over the years and cannot get into them.... I love them when others play them though....

For me, this is the guitar that covers the tone and feel without those things that are negative to me...
