I am looking to get feedback form anyone who has a'b'd and early SLO with a newer one. I am told they sound the same, but have heard others say the older ones are better. gee.. we have all heard that before. Anyone have any input. How bout a gut shot of a new one.

Here is gut shot of a 1992 SLO..

from what i recall (and in my opinion) there are no different revisions or component changes on any SLO soldano that is currently in production.

it is also common notice that alot of the techniques the SLO utilizes are out-of-style and/or outdated in engineering. non-of-them utilize any changes and can be blueprinted with the plethora of schematics floating around on the internet.

other than the common fact the filter caps drift in value over time (just like any other amplifier) a SLO from 1989 will be made the same way as a SLO made in 2009 and sound the same minus a few small differences because of the way caps are physically made.

the only difference is the rarety and the stimga of owning an older model. i have only seen 1 old SLO go for sale, and it was here on RT.

If there is any tonal difference, it would probably be that the older ones came with better tubes than what we get today. I don't think there has been any design changes to the SLO since it went into production.

I know there has been no circuit changes. I have confirmed this with both Bill and Mike, but some components have changed over the years due to availability. I am told some the resistors are different (brand or the like.....not value) but have no effect on the sound. I have seen another pic of a later one and it looked different inside. I am not tech so for all know it was just different color wiring. Long time ago and my memory is foggy.. Can someone post a pic of one made in the last 5 years or so...

I'm in. I'd love to see a photo too, but we also need better pics from you.

Although you can't see much of it, the power filter board looks different. But I can't say if there is any "spec" difference between the two. Might just be a different component supplier had to be used?

The '09 also has the Depth Mod. :D

I hear ya on the pics. Those are all i have for now, but I will take better shots in a few days when the amp arrives. I just bought this head. Home again to the SLO for the half dozenth time.. maybe Marshal Freak can post some better pics. these were good enough for my purposes. just to see the amps was all good and unmolested before buying.. loooks good Thanks Chuck.. but yeah, someone who knows what the hell they are looking at could prolly stand some bigger higher res pics..

Yes, thats pretty much it. The use of 6 radial instead of axial caps

You can see it better in David Turners gutshot

Yup the resistor's are a different brand. Cathode bypass caps look of a different brand. Power supply board looks different like you said death, all radial caps. Not really sure why they would want to do that. Maybe Cornell but the stop to that after they bought Mallory.. I just bought some alittle while ago. I see a BC cap for the switching in this one as well. Still looks very well made and put together. Very nice amp.

The SLO is really a simple 2 channel amp compared to a lot of newer designs. K.I.S.S. in action!!

Yeah you know after building a clone you can really see how many manufactures copied this amp. Pretty interesting.
