smallbox hi gain

I tried the boss sd1..I fell short of a hbe voicing...it was not the modded sd1...

Would love to find an a/b test of a boosted smallbox and a hbe gain structure comparison with just guitar riffs..

Of course if one of the 3 larger music centers in my area actually carried even so much as a pink taco I could see some daylight..2 guitar centers and a sam ash.nada.may as well be on a desert island!!!

A good pedal for boosting is the Tone Freak Naked OD. I designed it just for this purpose. Kind of gives you more of the same sound but a tad tighter. If that's what your going for.

So if I understand this I can get the more modern voiced hbe gain from the tone freak naked od1? I am going for it..is this a direct shipment from Friedman amplification. Com

Duh..sorry just Googled the tone freaks pedals..looking that way now..thank you:)

Looking at the tone freak severe...would that work with the smallbox? I am wondering if it may add a bit more hair if wanted and able to dial out as well?

Severe is a ton of gain. To much for this application.

Tone Freak Naked is sold out.
Any idea when more are coming?

Friedman smallbox is definitly provides high gain,in the sense of hard rock.I wouldn't want to comment on it doing Today's metal as I have little to no experience in this type of music. The amp has a very articulate gain/distortion in the British vein.IMHO..It has a really good tone stack and cuts with ease..It as well holds true to the guitar it is being driven by.The amp has my vote for best on the market, features and quality of build!! I am only disappointed I bought it used, only due to the fact I would have had to wait another month to buy new. This time curiosity didn't kill the cat but yet let him out of the bag and I am digging the F___ out of it!!! Thank You Friedman Amplification!!

I'm loving this amp more every day...amazing job by Dave and company. Sold my Bogner and haven't looked back! But I've also been curious about using a pedal to create a "HBE" channel for more metal moments.

I'm looking at a Timmy or a Klone (JJ Rocket Archer, etc..). Anyone with particular experience with these two types of pedals into a BE channel?

Edit: I've found a surprising amount of support for the Suhr Koko Boost for this kind of function - specifically into high gain amps that are already cooking, rather than the Klones or Timmy's aimed at lower gain amps. It definitely has some cool unique tone shaping abilities (esp the Reloaded version) that would help its versatility across different guitars, and amps.

Check out this clip of a SmallBox and a Koko Boost:

The Archer worked very well with my SB. At least in my opinion compared to my BOSS OD and TS808.

I can confirm - I use the Archer with my small box, Koko Boost and Empress Para-EQ work well, too.
Another pedal, which I like, comes from Greece: The Velvet Minotaur. I like it with the Plexy-channel as well.
Might be a good option for people in Europe. (http://www.velvetpedals.com/minotaur.html)

I'm using the Timmy pedal into the BE channel when I want more gain - works awesome without a trace of coloring the original tone.

I am wondering if I need a return and bias..I purchased the amp used and had not played a smallbox before hand only research and videos everything I could find.I love the amp and sound best I've owned out of over a dozen.Won't mention names out of respect.I have a high frequency I seem to not be able to reduce. If I run the bass on 8 presence on 3 mids at 11 o'clock same for trebele.11 o'clock I have a high trebele overall sound. With a prs McCarty with a rosewood neck and board or switch to a Anderson.arrives classic maple neck, which has a single coil in the bridge however it is a dimarzio super distortion.Funny thing the prs with Humbucker(stock 2003)seems to have more of the treble or just as much as the Anderson. So that being said do I need a fresh set of power tubes? The gain is there the loop works great, the channel switch and bright switch function 100% a mild pop here and there with footswitch,so for the most part the pre amp seems to be perfect. All functions included.Any help would be great on this gents. My pedal experience so far has been " mxr micro, zvex box of rocks, wampler uphoria, keeley red dirt, bogner wessex. The micro amp from mxr has been same as the others other than having eq options from the other overdrive pedals. The gain structure becomes tighter but doesn't quite get a little more brutal as I was hoping for.I also have thoughts on power tubes maybe reserving some of these pedals attack as well..I have not opened they chassis yet..I have a multi meter and a probe so I should check the ma on each of the power tubes and see if they are matched or maybe drifted a little..is the correct ma around 32 or so? Does the turret board have test points for bias? If not I have the bias probe so I'm good.Just wanting any knowledge before hand.I guess I could have re-tubed and biased quicker than this email with my non existent typing slop..I have some genelax kt77s I want to try would the 32 ma be the same bias setting? If anyone knows the plate voltage that'd help too..many thanks!!!

Ok.I'm cured!! Re tubed.sounds like the tone in all the post I have heard and seen. Now I will have to try these pedals to get into hbe land...I appreciate any help and information I received here.Peace Rockers!!!!

I just got done playing through my Smallbox and there is all kinds of gain in this amp. With the volume set to 9:00 o'clock and the lead channel's gain set at 2:00 o'clock, I was getting metal squeals and the lot even with the weak PU's in my Fender Yngwie Strat. If anyone is having trouble getting enough gain out of their Smallbox then I recommend turning it up some.
