+1 on Adrian Vandenberg- one of my earliest heroes, initially cuz of how cool he looked in the Whitesnake vids, only to find out he didn't play on all but one solo on the 1987 album. But damn, those early Vandenberg albums had some fantastic guitar work.

Not necessarily an influence- but after seeing some live Styx on TV, I was surprised James JY Young wasn't talked about more as a guitarist.
 
I agree about Gary and Ted. I was into those guys way before I ever picked up guitar ans really wore the live double-live REO Speed wagon album. Gary has a great sense of melody and even ther softer radio friendly songs he plays really nice on and doesn't over do it. I really wish Kevin and Gary could bury the hatchet and get back together.

Ted was really cool way back, double live gonzo album and was great performer

Funny as I'm more of a post EVH guy but have been getting more into my grass roots stuff before I picked up guitar in late 81 and that stuff is cools as shit and simple to play too.
 








I grew up on a steady diet of this type of midwest music, what they make now isn't music to me.

Gary was asked to leave REO due to substance abuse and Ted is batshit crazy politically, my how times change.
 
Gary pulled me up on stage to play a song with REO, I think I was 19. I handed him a joint and he handed me his guitar. I think I was 19, good thing I knew the song!

^^^ nice one Carl. That Derringer live album had some stunner solo's on it. How bout Bill Nelson from Be Bop Deluxe???? Killer guitar player many guitar geeks don't know about.

Dave Beegle, and his band Fourth Estate never got the notoriety they deserve imo. Great tone. He's also the gut who invented the Transperformance tuning system.

Man, You guys have named all of the good ones already! Def a lot of names I have not heard in a while. I will throw in Elvin Bishop and Toy Caldwell,,I had a lot of diff influences over the years and most of them were in popular bands but nobody knew who the guitar players were. A few of you mentioned Ted Nugent,,ahh the Nuge days with a stack of cranked Fender amps and a Byrdland,,now that was tone!! :rock: :rock:
