I'm actually thinking of trying to trade for a Budda Superdrive combo. Which is a bit mad, as I tried one several years ago & didn't quite bond with it. But it's been years now, & my tastes (and ears) have changed quite a bit. And besides, I didn't really keep it long enough back then to give it a fair shake. (That fact has bothered me ever since, tbh...)

But here's my thing... If I'm able to swing such a trade and end up not digging the Budda, will I have a harder time selling the Budda than the Maz? What's the market like in that respect?

Thanks,
C

How did you like the Maz? Could you get hard rock, or 80s Metal with a boost? Or is it only good for blues type tones?

The Maz can *definitely* do rock, even on its own. I've been running it with the (preamp) volume almost dimed & the master about 11 o'clock (which requires an attenuator, for home playing ~ sucka is LOUD!), and with a bridge humbucker that *easily* gets you AC/DC. Rolling back the guitar's volume, on those same settings, however, yields great cleans ... Not Fender/pristine, but this amp definitely cleans up the best of any I've tried. With a neck single coil on those same settings, guitar's volume about 5, you could almost do Jazz, except that the tone is too chimey/sparkly.

An od pedal in front as a boost will get you into hard rock territory. For 80s metal, I had even better results with my MXR 6-band eq in front. So, yeah, it'll get the job done, with the right pedal, certainly.

I love the tone of the Maz. And it has a great feel, too ~ it just feels great to play. My problem has been getting the fx loop to work with my pedals. The signal from the fx send is very hot, with the amp dialed in the way I described. My digital pedals (HarmonyMan & Visual Sound H2O) couldn't take it. My Carbon Copy did better, but when I kicked in an od or eq boost on top of the amp's gain, even the CC would overdrive and I'd lose high frequencies when I switched on the delay.

If I could live without the fx loop, This would've been the perfect amp for me... :(

I really dig my SD80.

Priviet, moi droog! :)

Did you ever compare the 80 to either of the EL84 models? Just curious about the differences. Also, what speaker(s) you using with the 80?

Tnx,
C

I played the sd30 1x12 combo. It was darker and saggier than my sd80 thru a 4x12..I'm using a mojotone 4x12 withe ri gb's. I also boost it with an sd1.

Dig. Sounds like I the 30 should be closer to what I'm looking for these days. And I still have a Keeley SD1 'round here somewhere...

EDIT: Fantastic tone & playing in that vid, btw! :D
