Never had a JSX but had the Triple XXX II.......I miss that amp. Sold it like an idiot for 400 bucks like 9 years ago to get the wife off my back after I bought the JVM.......
If you had a XXX II then you had the JSX.
I have been looking for a jsx myself…. Always wanted to try one….
Keep an eye out for a XXX II. And an XXX/3120 isn't that far far off from the JSX/XXX II.
I don't own any of them now, but played them pretty extensively back in the day. Every shop around me had them in stock and they would show up in backlines often.
A quick timeline and amp name changes
Started with the XXX
Satriani signed with Peavey and they developed the JSX from the XXX
When Satriani left Peavey, the JSX was renamed the XXX II
Then XXX was renamed 3120 and came stock with EL-34's instead of 6L6's
The one thing that stood out to me; mainly on the XXX, was the insane amount of gain on the ultra channel. Anything past 3/10 on the gain knob was overly excessive. Even the Crunch channel had huge amounts of gain. The JSX was no slouch in the gain department either.
The JSX is a modified XXX. Tonally there is a lot of overlap. This biggest difference between the two is the amount of gain. From my understanding and what I remember, the clean channel on each was pretty much the same on both amps. The XXX crunch channel & JSX ultra channel were also near the same; if not an exact copy. The JSX's crunch channel was modified from the XXX crunch channel to have less gain, a tad more upper mids, and a slightly tweaked active EQ. There are a few general feature differences too. Outside of that the JSX and XXX really aren't that far apart.
The only thing I didn't care for on the amps were the tacky chrome faceplate on the JSX and mudflap girls on the XXX.
