Gonna most likely have a NAD later tonight. I don't need to be out of the house until the 30th now so I grabbed my pedal board, two 4x12's and my VTM60 to play with for another two weeks.
Also, I'm gonna go pick up a Pravey JSX head later tonight. Never got to play one properly. Tomorrow should be fun.
In two weeks it's all going back in.

They say those are alright heads actually. Take that with a grain of salt anyways, as it’s still Peavey haha

I've gone through a lot of amps but the JSX I bought new in 2005 remains in the stable.

Never had a JSX but had the Triple XXX II.......I miss that amp. Sold it like an idiot for 400 bucks like 9 years ago to get the wife off my back after I bought the JVM.......

I really want to try a XXX II and a 3120

HNAD!!! The JSX is a Satriani version of the XXX which was Lynch’s signature amp with peavey.

I recently got my Triple XXX out of the vaults. Fun times. This one replaced my OG I sold off. Not sure if anything will ever sound like I remember that one. It was my first toob amp and I'll never forget the first chord I hit on the crunch channel. Fuck yeah!

I should have a custom faceplate made... If I keep it.

When you fire them up you'll find out pretty quick if the were exposed to extreme moisture & temps.
The PV could prolly benefit from a cap job.

If you had a XXX II then you had the JSX.

I have been looking for a jsx myself…. Always wanted to try one….☝️
Keep an eye out for a XXX II. And an XXX/3120 isn't that far far off from the JSX/XXX II.

I don't own any of them now, but played them pretty extensively back in the day. Every shop around me had them in stock and they would show up in backlines often.

A quick timeline and amp name changes
Started with the XXX
Satriani signed with Peavey and they developed the JSX from the XXX
When Satriani left Peavey, the JSX was renamed the XXX II
Then XXX was renamed 3120 and came stock with EL-34's instead of 6L6's

The one thing that stood out to me; mainly on the XXX, was the insane amount of gain on the ultra channel. Anything past 3/10 on the gain knob was overly excessive. Even the Crunch channel had huge amounts of gain. The JSX was no slouch in the gain department either.

The JSX is a modified XXX. Tonally there is a lot of overlap. This biggest difference between the two is the amount of gain. From my understanding and what I remember, the clean channel on each was pretty much the same on both amps. The XXX crunch channel & JSX ultra channel were also near the same; if not an exact copy. The JSX's crunch channel was modified from the XXX crunch channel to have less gain, a tad more upper mids, and a slightly tweaked active EQ. There are a few general feature differences too. Outside of that the JSX and XXX really aren't that far apart.

The only thing I didn't care for on the amps were the tacky chrome faceplate on the JSX and mudflap girls on the XXX.

JSX is a great amp. Still wish I had mine and always kinda think I'll add one back one day.

And of course the XXX was Lynch's sig amp for barely a second. I actually saw the posters at the Peavey Booth during summer NAMM with George on them in Nashville. And then just like that - nada.

Correct on the JSX tonal modifications. Plus the JSX added a the level knob for resonance, the FAT switches and the gate. All great upgrades from the XXX.
I had both amps and lived on the Crunch on the XXX and the Ultra on the JSX. I also dumped the 34's in the JSX and dropped in 6L6's. Just game the amp more girth.

The JSX crunch channel is a hot rodded Classic 50 gain channel which Joe loved at the time.
The JSX ultra channel is the XXX crunch channel with added gain/compression and some midrange tweaks.
The XXX ultra channel is it's own thing. Total chainsaw.
The XXX clean channel is like the Classic series. Fender-ish with mild breakup when pushed.
The JSX clean channel is it's own thing. Bone dry. No break up at all which was by design.

So i spent some time with the JSX earlier this morning. It is a pretty killer amp. I've owned a XXX and 3120 years ago and liked them both. Even though theres a fair bit of similarities, i have to say i like this JSX a bit more. The clean channel is more "plain" which will make it great for pedals, the crunch channel rocks and the lead channel is just insane. The crunch and lead really both have insane levels of gain for me.
I'll probably hang on to it for a while since it's going into storage in less than two weeks.
Its a nice compliment to my VTM. Will it replace my VTM? Nope. But it's fun to play.

Ill grab my microphone and interface tomorrow so i can do a proper NAD with clip.

Yep the clean was supposed to be that way because that is actually the channel Joe used with all his OD pedals. I really loved the Ultra on the JSX, I don't use OD's and I could dial in pretty much everything I wanted with that channel. And roll the volume knob off the guitar and it cleans up decently.

JSX's kick ass.
