I must hear some of this old Doug. I only learned of Doug through his work with Dio.

You never caught Lion live in the clubs? Man, Doug was one of my main guitar hero's in like 1987. My other guitar player and I went to see Lion at least 10 times then saw him in Hurricane, House of Lords, and even Bad Moon Rising.

The first time we saw Lion, we were there to see a different band. It was at the Country Club which I thought had the most killer sound system in LA. The curtain was down and Lion was getting ready to come on. Doug hit a couple of chords and it was just huge. Freaking huge. My other guitarist and I just looked at each other in shock and excitement. They came on and Doug just ripped, with tone that I remember to this day. Early on he used 2 Marshall JMP's with a Furman PQ-3 and a Roland Chorus Echo SR-555 to split into stereo.

Considering you're a far better guitarist than I am, this makes me feel pretty good about my position on LP's. Three thumbs up!

Come on Bob! Are you that hard up for a free beer at NAMM?

Is this a rhetorical question? :D

I'm what you call a lazy listener. As much as I LOVE music, and as much as I consider myself more of a listener/lover of music than a player, I've never really gone out of my way to find new music. I do remember Hurricane and House of Lords (Doug was in that band?), but never saw them live.

Musically uncultured and unedumacated... that's me. :aww:

Hey Curt, i gotta agree with ya on this! Im a huge fan of Doug's playing and i think around the time of the Lion album Dangerous Attraction, he was maybe at his best technique-wise! The solos to Hard and Heavy from that album is a great examples of his style back then.. he used so many cool sounding licks and really varied them too, going from wide stretched minor licks to more scaler examples!!!

I think Doug started getting bluesier around about the time he spent during Hurricane and Bad Moon Rising!

He was awesome on the 1st Bad Moon Rising album too. I think when his style really changed was when grunge came in and he was probably wondering what the hell to do. Both he and Joe Holmes switched to more grunge approved modded and beat old strats from their Charvels and Jacksons. And Doug got more trippy and bluesy for his solo albums which in my opinion don't even sound like the Doug I idolized. For the Burning Rain and Dio stuff he was part of the way back and he's great in Whitesnake, just not as great as I think he used to be.

Hey, it's happened to lots of guitarists and the guy is making more money with Whitesnake than he ever made with Lion, so what the hell do I know?

I know exactly what ya mean! I think from around about 94 until he joined Dio, Doug went through that trippy bluesy phase which was cool, but il be honest his old school style sounds better to me. When you listen to him on the Dio stuff you sorta hear the aggression in his playing starting to come back and on the live dvd he was playing like a madman!!!

I have a couple of old bootlegs of him playing in Hurricane and House of Lords, but never been able to find any Lion or Bad Moon Rising bootlegs. On the ones i have from the Hurricane/HOL period, his playing was rediculously good. AND he had some killer tone too (Frank Levi modded Marshalls and a Jose modded 50w).

Found "Next To You" on youtube... not bad... now Baby Snakes... hmm, this one is weird... now "I'm 18"... cool intro... fast forwarding to the solo... Hmmm... I like his Dio work better, but I'm sure there's a LOT more cool stuff than what's on these tunes.

Whats the "Im 18" track? what band?

He was only in hurricane during the slave to the thrill record, and in house of lords for the sahara album (played on all but two songs)

I don't know, but it has the same cover as "Next to You." I did notice a bunch of Hurricane vids with somebody other than Doug on them.

I feel like I now need to scour ebay for "slave to the thrill."

Edit: DOH! They're all expensive imports.

I wonder if Doug isn't going to be involved with a new boost pedal at NAMM???? A long time ago on his forum Doug mentioned working on a new boost pedal.

Haha yeah :D

Dougs playing on the Slave to the thrill album is really good!! One thing i know is that he personally hates the way his tone sounds on that cd. Its very different to how his tone is in real life, because they processed it big time with tonnes of reverb/delay/chorus etc. His tone on the Lion stuff and also on the Bad Moon Rising cds is way more raw and aggressive!

O.K., one of our fine forumites uploaded two Lion albums and I'm checking it out now. Great stuff!

If this stuff isn't out of print somebody just let me know and I'll be glad to buy them.

Love that Strat. :)

It's the best sounding strat you'll ever hear. Seriously... It also looks totally badass being relic'ed and all.

So what exactly is that guitar? and yeah, it looks super cool....I'm soooo GASing for a Custom Shop Strat right now it's stoopid.....the ones I played in the last week feel killer.

Man i hadnt listened to the Lion album "Trouble In Angel City" in so long.. I had been listening to "Dangerous Attraction" the most for a while. Im just listening to "Trouble in Angel City" now... Doug's playing, feel, vibrato and everything is perfect!! Theres certain moments during the solos that leave me with my jaw on the floor!!!

I love his vibrato. It always seems so "right" in context.

I think so too! Its hard to explain, but in certain bits he'l be playing a slower melodic bend lick and on the way down from the bend, he sorta slides and goes straight into an evil sounding legato lick to finish it off! He always seems to get his licks to fit and go into the next together so musically!
