So the Mesa Triaxis. Is it still a nice piece?

Something has me thinking about getting one of these again. I had one a while back, before I really knew mug about tone, and really liked it. I ended up parting with it because I lacked the time to really program it to where I needed it, but that shouldn't be an issue anymore. Just curious what the general consensus is.

There is a little of that Internet pile on that the triaxis lacks tone. I've owned several thru the years, and while its not my absolute favorite piece ever, the ones with no phat mod sound pretty sweet when paired with a good power amp.

That was part of my problem in the first go 'round too. That's no longer an issue.

I like the one I had .... but when it was stolen in 1997 I felt no need to replace it.

There are lots of useable tones in them, but I could never get a high gain rhythm tone I was happy with.YMMV.

I thought it was a great amp. Needed a lot of fooling around with but once you get it dialed in

I liked it, but I didn't feel that it really sounded any better than my original MP-1 so I let it go.

High gain leads and clean tones are great. I thought. High gain rhythm tones will need tweaking but they are there.

I owned a non-fat mod version and had it paired w/a boogie 50/50 and then a 2:90... I actually liked the 50/50 pairing better; more 'round sounding.' I always hated how different the loop sounded than the dry signal, and I only ended up using like 3 or 4 of the different channel modes. I have to admit though, if it weren't such a pain in the arse to shuffle that thing around from home to gig and whatnot, I'd probably have it still... a great sounding amp set-up, done right. I actually preferred Petrucci's early triaxis tones from his more recent stuff (all guitar/pickup changes considered) too.

Ive owned a tri for 10 years and also 2 quad preamps..To me, the quad is more open and seems to have more immediate/raw/urgent/responsive tone and amp like feel..both pre's are ran thru a mesa 500 poweramp...The tri is very nice, especially the dynamic voice eq.and it has great tone, if youre patient with it..theres a ton of info on this stuff over at boogieboard forum....I think mesa should either enhance/update the tri, or come out with a new preamp.

I'm keeping my TriAxis and selling my Mark IV short head because the TriAxis does all the tones I personally dial into a Mark IV and then some.

I had one and I loved it. I ran it stereo in an a/b/y set up with an mp-1 and it was massive through a vht 2502 power amp. The only reason I changed my rig was because it got to be a pain scrolling through all of the menus and tweaking stuff, especially when most of my patches ran both preamps simultaneously. I got rid of it for something with knobs I could see and turn (mak4). I sold my triaxis here for cheap because it was one of the early serial number ones without the phat mod and before they made some updates. It had a Lead 2 red channel that was supposed to be some kind of british high gain channel, but I could never get anything but fizz out of it. Every other setting had some great useable tones. I think it is a great unit, kinda wish I still had it.

Right now, between my M4 (see sig for modules) and my Boogie studio preamp (soon to be modded to IIc+ specs) I'm getting just about every tone I could want. I've been thinking though, because of recent financial situations, if I think I could get everything I need out of a Triaxis, I might bite the bullet and go that rout again. I'll have a VHT 2.90.2 very soon to use with my rig, and I know I could come out on top, money wise, by moving to a Triaxis. Tough decisions.

I wouldn't get rid of anything you have. Sounds like you are pretty happy with your tone. Don't sell anything, trust me you'll regret it. If you want to get a triaxis to add to your arsenal, go for it. Don't do it to try to streamline your rig. There'll be something missing and you'll regret it. Been there, done that. When it comes to gear, I only sell off stuff I'm not happy with. Otherwise I just add to what I have. Everytime I've sold something I liked to get something else or to try to put some money in my pocket I've regretted it (case in point, selling my triaxis was a mistake).

Agree .... or not being used much anymore. Selling gear I like to get something I am not real familiar with is often a mistake.
