So, what 50W "British" EL34 head is good? JVM205H?

I am a Mesa guy at heart, but briefly had a Stiletto Ace, which was/is a British-ey sounding amp that I really, really loved. Sadly, after only a couple days shit went south (bought used at GC, all sorts of problems with it) and I never got another one.

So, the question is, what's a sweet 50 watter with an effects loop that nails that hot rodded British sound? I suppose I should qualify with the fact that I don't want to spend a ton of money on it; $1000-$1600.

The 205H would seem to be the logical choice, since it is a Marshall, after all. But I'd be interested in hearing opinions on them. I don't have really any experience with them, outside of playing a JVM410H awhile ago.

For the money you can't beat the Ceriatone Chupa and Yeti.

+1 on the Ceriatone Chupcabra or Yeti. Awesome amps.

I'd go with a Laney VH or GH for that amount of money. Yes I know the VH is 100 watts, but in the price range.

Laney amps are the amps that Marshall thinks & wishes that Marshall builds.

I just bought a 1987x (and an attenuator to go along with it!!). Don't know if its EL84, but it sure is awesome for that sound.

I had a JVM410H, which also great. Really versatile. The 1987x is more of a one trick pony, but does that trick oh so well.

So you gotta figure out the flexibility you want, and make your decision with that in mind.

Yes to all the above... Yeti, Chupa, GH50... Maybe a Mesa ElectraDyne... Maybe a Rockerverb
FYI I have a ElectraDyne combo on the bay as a make an offer auction. I don't want to ship it though, not sure where you are...
It slays the Stiletto FWIW

Send a VTM-60 or 120 to FJA and put some EL-34's in.

Otherwise, try to find a Metaltronix or Lee Jackson (not Ampeg... unreliable) 50W head. Kind of rare but very awesome. For the price range, you can easily find an older 2204. I've been seeing even 1970's 1987's and 2204's for less than a grand used.

Carvin X100B is also a good choice.

Orange Rockerverb 50.
This. I have a 6v6 version that rocks. I understand the MkII el34 is nice too, but I can't speak to it.

Laney GH50L. JCM 800 tone with modern gain level capabilities. Single channel, no fucking around with that amp.

This! That said, I know it was modded to what you are looking for; however, my 1976 50-watt JMP (1987 model) is magical! I've got the best of both worlds in that amp...classic a hot-rodded 80's metal tones all in one.

Laney GH on the cheap or Splawn Pro Stock. It's the dirt channel of the Quick Rod.

Laney GH50L, as has been said. Don't need no steenkin' 2nd channel.

Isn't that the truth. No wonder why Mesa is pulling out of GC, they do a great job of fucking their amps up. A couple of Mesa's I picked up from GC had issues.

Yep. I have no affiliation with the seller, just a PSA for you.....

Yep, that's my Chupa for sale. Awesome amp, just not getting much playing time since I got my Splawn. It's more versitile than the Splawn, but I prefer the dry aggresive Splawn tone. Chupa is more smooth with lots of saturation and more gain available. Both are excellent modded Marshalls.

I have a Hughes & Kettner Statesman EL34 50 watt head that is probably what you are looking for.
It's inexpensive too. Hit me up for more info.
