get one of those RNR sound clones, or another russian clone?

or would you save your big boy bucks and spend another 200-300 more and get the "real deal" mesa recto preamp?

seriously i can't decide, one is more immediate the clones, which are like 400-550 or so, but idk what i'd be "missing" from a the mesa boogie one

and if the clones have their own little sweetness that mesa doesn't have, like a mesa clone is like a mesa boogie modded or something? ya konw?

any help would be cool, like if you know that the mesa preamps are just plain better, or you feel strongly about anything in particular let me konw

oh i have to mention the mesa triaxis, if it's truly capable of all that and some bag of recto, than maybe that's the best option? but idk

tell me i'm wrong and an idiot, and/or tell me what's what with some of these preamps, like which one topples them ALL

Mesa Studio with EQ, yeah it's not totally "Recto"..but it's better.

Agree. The studio is an old badass. Had one in a stereo rack rig years ago and it was killer with or without a boost. Shit. Just bought a guitar this morning, and now I have gas again.

yeah i would go for the studio pre, but i own a mark iv, so it seems to be too big an overlap, ya know?

Very true.

I would look for a deal on a recto preamp then. I’ve seen them pretty regular for 700. Maybe drop a couple lower offers on reverb and see if anyone bites. For the prices these and triaxis go for used, I would find a deal on a used head. I haven’t heard any clips of those clones that sounded as good.

When you combine the words mesa and pre-amp, I instantly think tri-axis. Arguably one of the best tube pre-amps out there.

I've got a Triaxis, Quad, and Studio. Honestly, I like the Studio the best, but they're all amazing. Of the three, I think the Triaxis gets closest to the Rectifier, but even then, I think it's closer to my Mark III than it is a Rectifier (I have a 2nd Gen Recto, and, well, just not my favorite). I think my Triaxis isn't one of the ones that has the Recto mode, though. OTOH, I LOVE my Uber! It's basically everything I ever wanted a Recto to be, but wasn't (at least not mine) with a little of those Bogner mids thrown in.

Of the options in the poll, the Triaxis is easily the most versatile. I'd guess that the Recto Pre gets the closest.

What power amp or DI solution would you be using this with? IMO, the power amp of the Recto makes as big a contribution to the sound of the Recto as the preamp does.

The clips I've been hearing of the new PRS MT-15 sound pretty close to the Recto sound, too...

Sounds great, really sounds like a Uberschall and a Dual Rec had a love child
Got that nice saturation on the pick attack, but still growls like a beast. Hard to believe its 15 watts.

Yeah i'm pretty happy to have a Recto/Uber-ish sound in my stable especially for the price. And dude it says 15 watts but damn this thing is way louder than my Friedman PT20.

yeah saving money for recto pre, i know some people on here literally drive lamborghini/ferraris, but i'm in a 3k kia, so a preamp is a big decision, monetarily or otherwise

but that is a good price in the above 700, damn!

was also curious about the synergy shit, 700 for the chassis right? then from there, but first i have to get my ferrari's oil change, which is about 5k

as for the older soldano pres, i can't find many anymore, the sp-77's used to be around, an 88 would be cool of course, another thing i was interested in which of course is about double money wise is the CAE se pre

we'll see and i do appreciate the help

thanks

I had a studio side by side with my triaxis, I still have the triaxis. I think the quad preamp might be better suited, though I have never tried one. I've only heard the recto preamp once, but it was a small club and the band was grindcore, so it is hard to make a good judgement. It sounded like bees to me, but again, tone is in the fingers, unless they're playing grindcore.
