Bogner OS 2x12

Port City OS 2x12

Splawn 4x12

Which and why? Hoping to possibly tryout a port city at the upcoming guitar/amp show in Raleigh. The others i have no clue about.

Any opinions i am all ears. Future plans are to possibly do a W/D rig.

I think you'll like the Port City if you try it, those are huge sounding. Funny they should both be on your list because I went through a shit load of cabs a few years back (you might remember :D ) and stayed with both the PC 2x12 and the Splawn and VHT Fatbittom 4x12s. Can't go wrong with any of those 3 IMO.

As for the Bogner, I haven't tried one. Can't see it sounding THAT much better than the Port City though.

Are you willing to buy new? Or limited to used pieces?

Also, what amps will you be using with the cab?

I am not gigging at the moment so used is the name of the game. I'll need something before too long, but i live 35 minutes from splawns main shop so the 4x12 isnt really a problem with regards to shipping :)

1994 Tremoverb and 5150 II. Possibly a marshall flavor soon. Speaker wise i know what i would like - a mix of eminence and celestions. But cabinet wise i would like to hear what RT says as i have been out of the cabinet loop for a long time.

Yeah i have not heard a splawn 4x12 personally but it is at the top of my list i think. I have heard that OS 2x12's sound a bit tighter than 4x12's and dont sound quite as boomy? Although i do like the big sound out of a 4x12.

Will the OS 2x12's be an ok compromise or should i stick to comparing all bogner/portcity/splawn 4x12's?

I sold my Splawn 4x12 loaded with 55 watt small blocks and I miss that thing. It sounded great with anything that was plugged into it.

Really depends on what you're trying to do. I didn't crave 2 more speakers when I was using the 2x12 but I was just using it at home and once you get to a certain volume your ears are ready to bleed anyway   . It saved a lot of space too so I also appreciated that.

ummmm, which upcoming guitar/amp show? the one in Sept, 2014

My splawn 2x12 sounds pretty damn large even compared to a 412, very pleased!!

If you're going 2x12, and willing to go new, I can't recommend Petersen Custom Cabinets enough. They are built by Matt Petersen (username 'Tonefree') over on TGP. He is a professional carpenter/woodworker/cabinet builder by trade, and has recently tried to launch a line of guitar cabinets. All baltic birch construction, metal recessed side handles, customizable tolex, grill cloth, etc. Absolutely stunning workmanship. I bought two of his horizontal 2x12 cabs and they sound phenomenal. I have a Bogner oversized 2x12 that hasn't been getting much play since I got the Petersens. Here are some pics:

Because he's just trying to launch his guitar cabinet business, his prices are very attractive at the moment. He can also load them with a variety of Celestions at great rates. Best of all, he's a super cool guy to deal with. He built me my two cabinets from the group up in under 3 weeks and provided progress pics throughout the process. Awesome customer service. Oh, and I have NEVER seen guitar cabinets packed so well for shipping. Might be worth reaching out to him to see what he can do for you. He also builds diagonal 2x12 cabs and 4x12 cabs - pics are on his Website.....
