Soldano Hot mod?

From what I know, it adds a gain stage to an amp...usually used in amps that aren't too high gain (older Marshalls for example), to add more, and kick it over the top.

Don't know about its compatibility with specific amps though.

Adds a gain stage to old school amps. JCM 800, Bassman , JMP, Plexi etc.

Without modding your amp.

The JCM 800 sound amazing with the Hot mod. :rock:

The Plexi sound too muddy with it. :no:
 
Hmmm, I have a Plexi clone. Wonder if it would sound muddy in that? Thanks for the input guys. :rock:
 
It sounds really cool in an 800 type but it doesn't clean up much. In a 4 holer type, you will want a MV if you don't have one.
 
there used to be this real super feminine guy named Insurrection, anyway he used a JCM800 2204 with a hotmod and got some GREAT tones.
 
I used a HotMod in my 2203 along with some Yellow Jackets. You just swap out the middle pre-amp tube and put in the HotMod. It does all gobbs of gain. I put it back to bone stock and just use an SD1 in front.

I recorded Jeff Beck's "cause "we end as lovers" and just used the guitars volume to adjust gain. Plenty of errors in this but at least you'll get an idea of how much gain the HotMod adds to a 2203

I tried it in my Super Lead. Didn't like it.
No Soldano doesn't make it anymore to the best of my knowledge.
 
Old thread that I came across while searching for something related... with all this talk of modded Marshalls, if you can find one, these are great in MV amps. A few comments here about them sucking in Superleads are for a reason, those are NMV amps.. you need a master volume in the circuit. Anyway, carry on my wayward sons!

I used it in a '71 Super Lead with a Rich Mod PPIMV. It didn't sound that good.
 
Soldano doesnt make it anymore as he said it was too expensive to produce and the mini sub tubes are out of production for many years. I think its a clipper as far as the extra gain stage. Its supposed to be used in older master volume amps like an 800, soldano said that it doesnt work as good without a master volume.

Ok, more specifically, it has to be used with a PRE phase inverter master volume (JCM800 type)rather than a post phase inverter master volume which to my recollection, is what the rich mod does... shitty deal about the tubes being out of production or hard to find though. What am I supposed to do when my tube goes? I think the overhead or costs involved could be addressed by selling the unit for 200$. What Mike means to say is, he will no longer be making 100% on these if he continued making them :D

I've used them over the years and still own a couple. They work great in master volume Marshall JMP/JCM 800's. They add a ton of useable gain, but you do have to watch out about preamp settings that are too high, as the sound can get a little fizzy/mushy.

The Hot Mod works MUCH better using a cleaner output tube. My choice is 6550's, though KT-88's work well. EL34's get a little squishy and undefined.

Never cared for them in Plexi/Super Lead type amps. Sounded like an undefined mess with too much gain.
 
exactly.. you can't max out the preamp.. I think I had mine at about 3 pm or 4 pm and then just used a bit of a clean push from a bad monkey to define the bass a bit. I have 6550's running in my JCM800 though so that helps.

Jerry, you should design another one! I think Jetcity is pushing these non tube preamp tube replacement red and blue jobbies that tame or push an amp into more overdrive but not exactly the same thing.

jet city uses wattgrinder? hhmm I still havent tried those in my amps.. wanted too but he wouldnt cut me a break. Guess he found a mass market deal.
