I noticed that Soldano is using Ruby Tubes 6L6GC power tubes in there SLO 100 I wonder why they switch from 5881 to 6L6GC

Yeah, almost certainly just a practical choice, for whatever reason. Maybe a few of all the other amps coming out of that factory already runs those 6L6 tubes, and they cut down on the purchase list. Lots of economy of scale at play.

In my SLO's, I prefer NOS 6P3S-E (Russian military grade 5881).

Mesa STR425's and current production Sovtek 5881's are the same tube.

Back in the 90’s, I direct ordered a purple SLO 100 with KT66’s. They were offering then at the time. From what I recall, that was the sweetest SLO I ever owned, and I owned many.

Just received a reply back from Soldano they basically said what ever tubes are available at the time there building SLO 100 watt amps

they used sovtek 5881s...
They are called 5881 but they were actually 6L6's in the form of 5881s...

I had an Avenger 50w that came with sovtek 5881s nad changed them to Shugangs 6l6s...they were much better...

How does that make you feel? Some people go crazy about tubes. But the reality is, if you can't make a good sounding amp with what is readily available, you can't make a good sounding amp.
