A lot of guys seem to really like the Electro Voice speakers with their SLOs. I've never had the opportunity to try them. How are they??

I'd like to know as well. Though my clone sounds awesome with V30s (when it's cranked). And are we talking about EVM12s or EV12Ls?

EVM12Ls are what Clapton had in his cabs when he used SLOs.

When I had my last SLO, I tried it through an old Mesa halfback cab. Too bright. I know, turn down the presence etc....but that's part of the tone for me...presence maxed treble low. The SLO tone for me has to have the amp eq'd similarly with some wiggle room. So I couldn't use the EVs. Just too bright. Cab was from 88 so not sure which EVs were in there? Just not reissues....

For clean and crunch it works great but for high gain it does tend to be a little bright.

If it was the old metal grill cab then the top half was probably open and the bottom sealed. They came in a few different configurations. Lot's of these cabs you will find that someone usually takes the EVM's out and replaces then with something cheap, like 75's. The one I had was loaded with EVM's on the bottom and MC90's up top. It sounded like shit with a Triple Recto but sounded GREAT with any Mark series amp. It also sounded great with a Herbert.

The EVM12Ls do sound amazing with the Mark series amps. I've got a MK series cab, but with four EVM and it kicks ass with the MK2b and MK2c+. The SLO not so much. This amps sound terrific with V30s and the EVH 4x12s(probably my fave cab!!!).
Put it this way... if you want tight metal sound, more on the modern side, go with V30s.
If you want a tone a bit more refined(think the album Balance), go with the EVH cab.

I haven't played my SLO through EV's. I currently have 2 British made V30's and 2 reissue Greenbacks in my Bogner 4x12. It's really sizzly. More than I thought it'd be. I've also mixed the V30's with some Veteran 30's in an X pattern, and I'm thinking I might go back to that combo. It was really deep, wide, and massive sounding.

Yup it was setup that way but I was able to peek in and see that they were EVs. Sounded killer with the MKIII I had but then I sold it, and it just didn't fit with the SLO. My kid has it now though..perfect for his metal band!

I just haven't found an amp that doesn't kill through my G12 65 cab. SLO included. Had an EVH 4x12 also and it sounded good, but not as good as the 65s. I'll always miss having an SLO but even though they are 2 different animals, I like my Jubilee just as much.
