Thanks, I used to have a 1992 slo,

Does anyone know how the newer ones compare to the older ones? I see one from 2005 and I was wondering what that era was like..

I have seen it written on here a couple times that the old ones are better -

Wondering if this is true and if so _____How so?!

Mike says the amps are still built the same way as when he started, other than some suppliers/parts have changed. I've owned 4 a '90, '92, '93 and now an '88. Can't say I've heard any difference.

I have a mid 90s and a mid 00s and they definitely sound different.
The only difference I can find is another type of signalcaps. The older one has brown ones and the newer has orange ones.
The older sounds much darker, even with the exact same tubeset in it.
As of late there's also another type of supplycaps (with another board) in an SLO because of price and availability issues with the former radial caps but I've never heard such an amp and can't comment on that.

Just some changes in the size/type of filter capacitors used in the power section (older parts no longer made, less reliable), and a slightly different layout of the power amp board... but they all sound the same, whether a 1992, 2002, or 2011.

In recent years they are being built with Onetic trannies, whereas they used to be built with DeYoung trannies. The Onetics are the ones that are used on the Slo clones.

Not true at all. I just bought a brand new 2011 SLO and they still have DeYoung transformers... both power and output. The lower end models (Avenger, Hot Rod et al) use Onetics... but not the SLO. You should really get your facts straight before posting this sort of claim as gospel.

I have a 92 and 2001. Both have the same exact tube set ups and sound identical when I a b them through a a b. Box.

I asked the very same question to Mike in my SLO search. He said nothing has changed except the move from LA to Seattle. I weighed buying a $2600-$2800 used head with and sending it to Soldano for the factory mods. With the mods, time and round trip shipping, it was almost as cheap to get a brand new one with another $500 added to it. So, it was a no-brainer for me.

I 've never compared various model years - but all I can say is my 2007 is the BEST amp I can imagine for my tastes.

Soldano is awesome - love my SLO, love my HotRod.

Regardless of the year made - I don't think you can go wrong....

My SLO Red Head may get cleared through Customs today. Starting to get a real rubbery one just thinking about it
