Soldano to compliment SmallBox?

First off, I LOVE my SmallBox, it's the best amp I've ever owned.

Though, as is typical, GAS strikes and I'm interested in the Soldano Hot Rod 25 (by all accounts a baby SLO). I'm just wondering if there's enough difference in tone to justify one - the lower wattage is appealing for home, and 5881/6L6 powered have a different feel - but mostly I love the specific SLO lead sound.

So, I'm looking for any insight if the Soldano would do metal a bit better than the SmallBox. For me metal gets as heavy as Pantera, no Djent stuff here, just classic Metallica or Dream Theater. It seems like there's more gain on tap, but I don't have extensive experience with a SLO or other Hot Rods.

I use a couple different boosts now into the SmallBox for that type of metal and it sounds great, just curious if the Soldano would give me a little something extra in that department?

Replied to your email, Skeeter. Glad to chime in! I love both amps. Feel they're two different animals altogether...if you have a shot to have each, go for it!! They play well together because they don't really step on each others toes sonically. The Soldano is brighter, the Friedman, more neutral (as you know). Both have their unique qualities and cover a lot of ground. Add pedals to them and it just goes on and on. I think for what you're after, the Soldano would be a great alternative - just keep the SB too!!

Changing the subject just a little what boosts are you using with the SB ? I`ve been using the TC Electronic set as a clean boost with the toggle in mid mode and it just kills on the BE channel

Do you mean the TC Spark?

In the clean channel, I've been using a Wampler Euphoria, Fulldrive 2, and a klone (J Rocket Archer) - for lot's of different lighter OD flavors.

In the BE channel - in addition to some from above (the lesser ODs, more boost), the Suhr Koko Boost (Reloaded) is the best at taking me into a much harder territory rock. Especially emphasizing the low-mids.

I also use a Strymon OB.1, one of the more overlooked of Strymon's offering, that provides super clean (optical) compression for tight riffing. Plus it also has a clean boost onboard.
